  • Patent number: 5674639
Abstract: An electrochemical cell includes a first active electrode material having a tubular shape closed at one end and open at the other, a second active electrode material disposed within the cavity of the tubular shaped first active electrode material, a scrolled separator disposed between the sidewalls of the cavity and the second active electrode material, and an insulator disc disposed between the closed end of the cavity and the second active electrode material. The scrolled separator and insulator disc cooperate to provide a liner which provides a continuous electrical and physical barrier between the cavity walls and the second active electrode material disposed within the cavity. The cell utilizes a simple design which minimizes space occupied by the separator and insulator disc, while maximizing the available area for ion mass transfer between the electrodes, whereby greater cell efficiency and improved performance characteristics are achieved.

  • Patent number: 4032696
Abstract: The invention relates to a cylindrical type cell employing an outer cathode or cathode collector, a separator and an inner disposed anode in the form of at least two discrete bodies, said anode bodies having centrally disposed biasing means for continuously exerting an outward force against said anode bodies so as to provide good physical contact between the anode-separator-cathode or cathode collector interfaces.

    Filed: February 18, 1976
Date of Patent: June 28, 1977
    Assignee: Union Carbide Corporation
    Inventor: Lewis Frederick Urry
  • Patent number: 3940287
Abstract: Primary dry cell comprising a metal anode cup having a cathode mix therein, separated from the side wall of the anode cup by a porous, ionically permeable separator, and having an open end which is gas-tightly sealed by a closure including a vent, wherein a gas-venting passageway is provided around the cathode mix comprising a longitudinal groove in the side wall of the anode cup communicating with the void space defined between the cathode mix and the seal closure.
