  • Patent number: 8670161
Abstract: A printer driver enables a user to determine whether the features that are required to print a specified job are available to a selected network printer. The printer driver queries the selected printer to acquire the current status and other relevant information for each feature that is required to print the job, then provides the results of the query at a user interface. Accordingly, if any of the required features are unavailable to the selected printer, the user can print the job using another printer or take some other appropriate action.

Date of Patent: March 11, 2014
    Assignee: Xerox Corporation

  • Publication number: 20050052660
Abstract: A method and apparatus for updating print drivers is described. The described system includes a port monitor that monitors the configuration and status of a printer. When changes occur to the configuration of a printer, the port monitor updates a print driver registry on the print server. The port monitor also wakes the print driver on the print server and informs the print driver of the configuration changes. Depending on the client operating system used, a client device connected to the server's shared print queue may either directly read or request the configuration data from the print server. In some client operating systems, the client device may also update a local registry on the client device to reflect the changes in configuration of the printer. The described system allows print drivers to have a consistent interface to printer configuration and status data regardless of which version of the Microsoft Windows Operating System is used by the client.

  • Publication number: 20030038958
Abstract: In a digital printing system, such as including one or more printers connected to a host computer via a network, it is occasionally desired to download software for new fonts to the printers. In many cases, different printers support different “font types” or “font formats,” meaning different encoding methods for the font software. The various printers on the network are queried by remotely querying the MIB associated with each printer, to determine what font type is supported by each printer. When the font software is downloaded, where necessary for a particular printer, the original font software is converted to be supportable by the printer.
