  • Patent number: 9977247
Abstract: A display can be utilized with an image source. The display includes a collimator and a substrate waveguide. The substrate waveguide sees collimated light from the collimator at an input and provides the collimated light to an output. The collimated light travels from the input to the output within the substrate by total internal reflection. An input diffraction grating is disposed in a first area at the input and an output diffraction grating is disposed in a second area at the output. The second diffraction grating is matched to the first diffraction grating. A combiner alignment detector is not required due to the periscopic effect according to one embodiment.

  • Patent number: 9715067
Abstract: A head up display include an image source, and a waveguide. The waveguide has a first diffraction grating and a first end and a second diffraction grating at a second end. The waveguide is positioned as a combiner and allows viewing of an outside scene and information from the image source. The first and second diffraction gratings are surface relief gratings having a high index of modulation.

  • Patent number: 9541763
Abstract: An active HUD boresight alignment system for correcting a boresight of a HUD in an aircraft relative to an aircraft boresight is described. The system has an aircraft IRU, a HUD angular orientation detector and a detector. The aircraft IRU is rigidly coupled with the aircraft and configured to define an aircraft boresight indicative of a three axis angular orientation of the aircraft. The HUD angular orientation detector is rigidly arranged relative to at least one component of the HUD in the aircraft, and configured to determine a HUD boresight indicative of a three axis angular orientation of the HUD. The processor is coupled with the aircraft IRU and the HUD angular orientation detector and configured to determine a boresight angular offset of the HUD boresight to the aircraft boresight for at least one axis of the three axis angular orientation, and to correct for the boresight angular offset based on the determined boresight angular offset.

  • Patent number: 8937772
Abstract: A stow mechanism for head up display includes a bracket for attachment to an environment associated with the head up display. The stow mechanism can also include a combiner arm rotatably attached to the bracket. The combiner arm rotates in at last two degrees of freedom as the combiner arm is rotated with respect to the bracket from an operational position to a stow position.

  • Patent number: 8749890
Abstract: A head up display includes an image source, collimating optics, and a combiner. The collimating optics are disposed between the combiner and the image source. The combiner receives collimated light from the collimating optics at an input and provides the collimated light to an output. The collimating light travels from the input to the output within the combiner by total internal refraction. An input diffraction grating is disposed in a first area and an output diffraction grating is disposed in a second area. The first area is smaller than the second area.
