Patent number: 6242114Abstract: An optical fluorescent composite which controls fluorescence intensity comprises a solid layer containing fluorescent material (such as a phosphor) formed on an optically transparent base or substrate and optically coupled to a spectrally selective filter, also formed on the base or substrate, that modifies the intensity of either or both the excitation or emission spectra of the phosphor. Devices constructed in this manner serve as stable references for fluorescent measurements. Sets of such device is made with filters having different transmittance amplitudes, can characterize fluorescent measurement response over several orders of magnitude. In one of numerous alternative structure, the fluorescent layer can be formed on one substrate, the filter formed on a second substrate and the two substrates joined together.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 1994Date of Patent: June 5, 2001Assignee: Optical Coating LaboratoryInventors: Nancy L. Patent number: 5959762Abstract: A flexible panel is provided that is easily and conformingly applied to a curved display screen of a VDU to afford, in a lightweight manner, variably adjustable contrast enhancement of the VDU while simultaneously providing a decrease in the amount of ambient light reflected from the curved display screen. The flexible panel is a glass microsheet layered, on one side thereof, with an antireflection coating and, on the other side, with an electrochromic device. The electrochrmic device allows for variable adjustment of the contrast of the VDU as a function of the voltage applied across the electrochromic device. The flexible glass microsheet dually possesses the advantages of conventional rigid glass panels, such as excellent optical performance, high durability, capability of being coated with various optical coatings under extreme temperature, pressure and chemical conditions and the additional benfeit of physical flexibility.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 1997Date of Patent: September 28, 1999Assignee: Optical Coating Laboratory, Inc.Inventors: Steven P. Bandettini, Lindsey Brown, Bryant P. Hichwa, Michael J. Cumbo, J. Gordon H. Mathew, Nada A. O'Brien

Patent number: 5368902Abstract: Method for providing a patterned thin film on a flexible web-like substrate having at least one surface. A patterned release coating which carries the desired pattern is deposited on the surface and has openings therein through which the surface of the substrate is exposed. A thin film is deposited over the patterned release coat and onto the portions of the surface exposed through the openings. The patterned release coating is then removed and the thin film portions carried thereby to provide a patterned thin film on the substrate.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 1993Date of Patent: November 29, 1994Assignee: Flex Products, Inc.Inventors: David W. Todd, Lindsey Brown, Roger W. Phillips, Elliot E. Overshiner

Patent number: 5059454Abstract: Method for providing a patterned thin film on a flexible web-like substrate having at least one surface. A patterned release coating which carries the desired pattern is deposited on the surface and has openings therein through which the surface of the substrate is exposed. A thin film is deposited over the patterned release coat and onto the portions of the surface exposed through the openings. The patterned release coating is then removed mechanically along with the thin film portions carried thereby to provide a patterned thin film on the substrate. The mechanical removal may be accomplished by advancing the coated substrate through a solvent while brushing the substrate, subjecting the substrate to high velocity air, or contacting the substrate with the adhesive layer of a web.Type: GrantFiled: April 26, 1989Date of Patent: October 22, 1991Assignee: Flex Products, Inc.Inventors: David W. Todd, Lindsey Brown, Roger W. Phillips, Elliot E. Overshiner
