Patent number: 10366718Abstract: A signal is monitored that provides an indicator of disturbance affecting a hard disk drive. In response to determining that the indicator of the disturbance satisfies a threshold, a lattice recursive least squares computation is applied to the signal to determine at least one notch frequency. A notch filter is formed using the at least one notch frequency. The notch filter is used by a servo controller loop that positions a read/write head over a disk of the hard disk drive. The notch filter is applied to the servo control loop for subsequent positioning of the read/write head.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 2018Date of Patent: July 30, 2019Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventor: Lou Supino

Patent number: 9460744Abstract: A voice coil motor control signal is detected being coupled into a vibration sensor of a hard disk drive. The vibration sensor is used to provide a feedforward signal to a servo control system of the hard disk drive. In response to detecting the coupling, the feedforward signal is modified to prevent instability of the servo control system.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 2015Date of Patent: October 4, 2016Assignee: SEAGATE TECHNOLOGY LLCInventors: Stephen Matthew Gaub, Lou Supino

Patent number: 9202496Abstract: In response to positioning a read/write head of a hard drive, a voice coil motor (VCM) input signal is applied to a voice coil motor and a microactuator (PZT) input signal is applied to a microactuator. A position signal is determined in response to positioning the read/write head. A PZT component is decoupled from the position signal to determine an estimated VCM response. The estimated VCM response used to determine an estimated VCM disturbance. A VCM component is decoupled from the position signal to determine an estimated PZT response. The estimated PZT response used to determine an estimated PZT disturbance. The VCM input signal and the PZT input signal are modified respectively to compensate for the estimated VCM disturbance and the estimated PZT disturbance.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 2014Date of Patent: December 1, 2015Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventor: Lou Supino

Patent number: 6629089Abstract: A robust Artificial Neural Network controller is proposed for the motion control of a magnetic disk drive voice coil motor (voice coil motor). The neural controller is used to approximate the nonlinear functions (actuator electromechanical dynamics) of the voice coil motor while having on line training. One main advantage of this approach, when compared with standard adaptive control, is that complex dynamical analysis is not needed. Using this design, not only strong robustness with respect to uncertain dynamics and non-linearities can be obtained, but also the output tracking error between the plant output and the desired reference can asymptotically converge to zero. Additionally, standard offline training, utilizing training vectors to stimulate the voice coil motor, is not required.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 2000Date of Patent: September 30, 2003Assignee: Cirrus Logic, Inc.Inventor: Lou Supino

Patent number: 6490237Abstract: A Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) algorithm capable of discriminating among various disc types including double-layer DVD, single-layer DVD, CD-ROM/CD-Audio, CD-R, and CD-RW is used to identify disc type in an optical drive. This FIS optical disc determination algorithm relies on the physical properties of the reflecting layer of an optical disc, using a DVD and CD photo diode outputs, to discriminate among several disc types. Focus error and quad sum data from both DVD and CD lasers is provided as eight inputs to a nineteen rule Sugeno FIS which outputs a value corresponding to drive type.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 2001Date of Patent: December 3, 2002Assignee: Cirrus Logic, Inc.Inventor: Lou Supino
