  • Patent number: 6002051
Abstract: Novel compounds of the general formula ##STR1## wherein each R.sub.1 is independently a tertiary alkyl group containing from 4 to about 8 carbon atoms and each of X, Y and Z is independently hydrogen or a hydrocarbon-based group, provided at least one of X, Y and Z is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing at least 7 carbon atoms, and wherein R.sub.1 is different from the at least one of X, Y and Z that is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing at least 7 carbon atoms, R.sub.2 is an alkylene or alkylidene group, and n is a number ranging from zero to about 4. Also disclosed are methods for preparing novel phenolic compounds, organic compositions, including lubricants based on oils of lubricating viscosity and fuels based on normally liquid fuels and additive concentrates containing the novel phenolic compounds of this invention.

  • Patent number: 4997968
Abstract: A method of preparing an oil-soluble composition is disclosed. The method comprises preparing a dihydrocarbyl monothiophosphoric acid characterized by the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently hydrocarbyl groups of from 1 to about 30 carbon atoms and X is oxygen or sulfur, with the proviso that one X is sulfur comprising reacting(A) a phosphite ester of the structure ##STR2## with (B) a sulfur source, in the presence of(C) a catalytic amount of an amide of the structure R.sub.3 CONR.sub.4 R.sub.5 wherein R.sub.3, R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are each independently hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group containing from 1 to about 30 carbon atoms or an ethoxylated amide of the structure ##STR3## wherein the sum of x and y is from 1 to about 50; and isolating the reaction product obtained.

  • Patent number: 4755311
Abstract: This invention is directed to borated amine salts of dihydrocarbyl monothiophosphoric acids, and to lubricating and functional fluid compositions containing said borated amine salts. The lubricating and functional fluid compositions have improved extreme pressure properties and high temperature stability. The borated amine salts of the invention may be characterized by the formula ##STR1## or mixtures thereof wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each independently hydrocarbyl groups containing from 1 to about 30 carbon atoms. In one preferred embodiment, the amine salts are derived from hydroxyhydrocarbyl amines. The lubricating and functional fluid compositions may contain, in addition to the borated amine salts, at least one nitrogen-containing composition prepared by the reaction of a hydrocarbon-substituted succinic acid-producing compound with at least about one-half equivalent, per equivalent of acid-producing compound, of an amine containing at least one hydrogen attached to a nitrogen atom.
