    Abstract: An angioplasty and stent delivery system to facilitate introduction and placement of a stent, including a catheter having an expandable distal portion constructed and arranged for expanding the outer diameter of the catheter from a contracted state to an expanded state: a stent positioned around the distal portion of the catheter having a contracted condition and being expandable to an expanded condition, and being sized in the contracted condition to closely surround the catheter in the contracted state, the expandable distal portion of the catheter including a balloon within which or over which there is included on a catheter shaft at least one axially movable or enlargeable body of a diameter larger than the catheter shaft to which the stent and balloon are fitted, as by crimping, for holding the stent in place until it is released therefrom by expansion of the balloon.

The distal shaft section includes a reinforcing and kink-resistant transition member extending throughout the length of the distal shaft section. The transition member allows the proximal guide wire lumen aperture to be placed distally from the distal end of the hypotube. This configuration permits the length of the guide wire lumen to be minimized.

    Abstract: A system/assembly for delivery and deployment of an inflation expandable stent within a vessel, comprising a catheter having proximal and distal ends; a stent, inflation expandable from a delivery diameter to a deployment diameter, such that the delivery diameter is reduced from the deployment diameter for conforming the stent to the catheter, such that the stent, in its delivery diameter, is coaxially mounted on the catheter near the catheter distal end; an expandable inflation means coaxially mounted on the catheter axially within the stent, for expansion of the stent from the delivery diameter to the deployment diameter upon application of fluid deployment pressure to the inflation means; and a securement component coaxially mounted on the catheter, axially within the expandable inflation means, the securement component designed and adapted to provide a securement pressure to the stent in the delivery diameter to maintain the stent in position on the catheter during delivery to the deployment site.

    Abstract: A variable length balloon catheter having an inner tubular member extending over the length thereof with a guide wire lumen therethrough. The distal waist of a balloon is affixed proximate the distal end of the inner tubular member while the proximal end or proximal waist of the balloon extends into and is slidably received within an outer tubular member. Means for sealing or preventing fluid flow between the proximal waist and inside diameter of the outer tubular member are provided. The means for sealing can include a passive or close tolerance seal assembly, an active seal assembly, or an axially elongatable membrane seal assembly. Axial movement of the inner tubular member varies the length of balloon extending distally beyond the distal end of the outer tubular member, thus determining inflated balloon length.

    Abstract: An improved intravascular catheter, such as a balloon catheter, and a method for use thereof. The catheter includes an elongate shaft and the improvement includes a close fitting sleeve located around the shaft and movable therealong. The intravascular catheter is adapted to be used with an introducer device, such as a guide catheter, having a hemostatic valve located at a proximal end thereof. The close fitting sleeve is adapted to be positioned at the hemostatic valve so that the hemostatic valve can be sealed upon the sleeve allowing the intravascular catheter shaft to be readily advanced in relation to the hemostatic valve and introducer device while limiting bleeding between the sleeve and the shaft of the intravascular catheter.

    Abstract: A connector for use in flushing or drawing fluid through an inner lumen of a tubular member has a body with a proximal end, a distal end, and a flushing lumen extending therethrough. The body has a distal portion wherein the flushing lumen increases in size from a first proximal cross-sectional area to a second larger distal cross-sectional area so that an annular surface within the distal portion presses against an end of the tubular member when the end of the tubular member is inserted into the distal end of the body. A temporary fluid seal is created between the body and the tubular member when the tubular member is pressed against the annular surface. In one preferred embodiment, a flange is disposed within the connector, the flange being designed so that a portion of the flange extends into the inner lumen of the tubular member when the tubular member is pressed against the annular surface, thereby providing a path for leading a guide wire into the inner lumen.
