    Abstract: A fluid pressure regulator has a high pressure side and a low pressure side separated by a plunger. The plunger is biased against fluid pressure on the low pressure side. The fluid pressure on the low pressure side in opposition to the biasing means moves a primary passage through the plunger into and out of flow communication with fluid on the high pressure side under normal conditions. A fine passage through the plunger moves into and out of flow communication with fluid on the high pressure side under start-up conditions.

    Abstract: Tool chatter during a pipe threading operation is reduced by positioning a pipe end to be threaded alongside a threading tool, positioning a radially expandable mandrel inside of the pipe end, securing the mandrel by expansion, threading the pipe end with the threading tool, and removing the mandrel. A preferred mandrel comprises a housing, an elastomeric sleeve, a piston, and a cylinder head. The elastomeric sleeve covers the outside cylindrical surface of the housing. The device is filled with hydraulic fluid and the piston is actuated to expand the sleeve against the inside of the pipe. Vibrations from the cutting operation are absorbed by the hydraulic fluid after being transmitted into it via the elastomeric sleeve.

    Abstract: A hydraulic accumulator comprises a pressure shell, a bladder, and a rod. The pressure shell is filament wound around a leak proof barrier/mold. The bladder is tubular and carried by the rod. The rod extends though the pressure shell and seals to the ends of the shell. The shell has generally frustoconical sections connecting the ends of the shell to mid section. The bladder is tubular and expandable. A first chamber having an annular cross section for gas is formed between the rod and the bladder. A second chamber having an annular cross section for liquid is formed between the bladder and the shell. A first flow passage is formed through an end seal means communicating with the first chamber. A second flow passage is formed though an end seal means communicating with the second chamber.

    Abstract: There is provided an elastomeric annular seal having a chamfered first end and a chamfered second end and a generally cylindrical outer surface extending between the first end and the second end. Preferably, the elastomeric annular seal is mounted on a rigid sleeve. The seal has annular cross sections to fit the sleeve and the chamfers are radiused when viewed in longitudinal section so that the radiused chamfered ends of the elastomeric annular seal together with the outside surface of the rigid sleeve form annularly shaped cups. Fluid pressure in the cup will expand the seal against the inside wall of a tubular when the seal/sleeve is appropriately sized for the tubular in which it is deployed.

    Abstract: A blow out preventer comprises a valve casing assembly, a tubing cutter, a hydraulic cylinder and piston, and a linkage assembly. The valve casing assembly has a first port and a second port. The ports are in axial alignment along a longitudinal axis extending between the ports. The well tubing is run through the ports and transversely through the tubing cutter. The tubing cutter is rotatably positioned in the casing assembly and is rotatable from a first position to a second position. The tubing cutter has an axis of rotation which is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the valve casing assembly. The piston is annularly shaped and moves parallel to the longitudinal axis of the valve casing. Linkage between the piston and the tubing cutter converts the axial movement of the piston into rotational movement of the tubing cutter to shear the tubing when needed. When the tubing has been sheared, a seal is formed between a face of the tubing cutter and a valve seat in the valve casing assembly.

    Abstract: Method and multipurpose apparatus for internally cleaning a hydraulic control system are disclosed. The method is carried out by establishing a turbulent flow of cleaning fluid through the hydraulic control system and maintaining the turbulent flow until the hydraulic control system has been cleaned without diverting a portion of cleaning fluid through a bypass valve, by use of a variable speed pump coupled to a fluid accumulator. The apparatus comprises a filtration system for cleaning up recovered fluid, a primary pump, an accumulator, a first manifold for fluid injection, a second manifold for fluid recovery, and a return conduit from the second manifold to the filter.
