  • Patent number: 5039506
Abstract: In a method of preparing sodium monosulfide by means of reacting sodium and sulfur under protective gas, the entire sodium determined for reaction is placed in a receiver in a first stage, preheated to temperatures of 100.degree.-150.degree. C., sulfur is gradually added in the required amount of the material in the receiver under intensive mixing, whereby the temperature of the reaction mixture is maintained at 120.degree.-250.degree. C., and in a second stage the formed initial product is allowed to react under continuation of the mixing at 250.degree.-480.degree. C., until a Na.sub.2 S content of at least 95% by weight has been attained.

  • Patent number: 4982871
Abstract: A gastight container and method are disclosed for the storage, transport and, optionally, the sedimentation of substances which are solid at room temperature and which can be introduced in or out in a molten state under a vacuum or, preferably, under protective gas, especially of lithium metal which may contain solid impurities in the melt. The container has cylindrical middle section and a lower and an upper dished end provided with a manhole. A double jacket (2), (3) defines a space (1) for receiving sodium as heat-transfer medium.

  • Patent number: 4857665
Abstract: A process for converting the filtration residue of crude sodium produced by fusion electrolysis into a sodium alcoholate with a low NaOH content. The residue first is intensively and continuously mixed for 2-5 hours at 300.degree.-600.degree. C. and then is added with stirring to the particular alcohol, possibly with heat added. The alcoholate solution so formed is filtered and the alcoholate may be obtained from the filtrate by distilling off the solvent.

  • Patent number: 4767453
Abstract: A process is described for creating the flow properties to filtration residues from sodium production. These viscous-to-hard filter residues can be changed into a thin-fluid consistency by intensively agitating them under an inert gas for 2-6 hours at temperatures between 300.degree. and 600.degree. C.

  • Patent number: 4640832
Abstract: There is described a process for the production of pure sodium polysulfides directly from the elements sodium and sulfur. For this purpose, the sodium and the sulfur under a protective gas and in a stoichiometrical ratio corresponding to the desired polysulfide are alternatingly dosed into a previously present melt of a polysulfide with vigorous stirring, the dosing being in portions such that upon introduction of the sodium the reaction mixture remains in the condition of a stirrable suspension and upon introduction of the sulfur this is completely reacted to a polysulfide of the desired or higher sulfur content.

  • Patent number: 4584068
Abstract: A device for the fused salt electrolysis of alkali metal halides by the Downs principle becomes operable on an expanded scale, by a process ensuring a favorable thermal economy of the cell, through the incorporation of a double bottom, an improved housing for receiving the anode sleeves, and a differentiatedly heat controllable base, shell, and cover construction with variable current load.

  • Patent number: 4536938
Abstract: A process is described for the production of solid alkali metal strands, whereby molten alkali metal is introduced to an extrusion apparatus and is continuously cooled down as the metal travels along a section of the extrusion apparatus by means of a worm. There is a temperature gradient between the point at which the molten alkali metal enters the extruder down to a temperature below its solidification point near the nozzle, at which the metal is still sufficiently ductile for extrusion, and is then fed to a nozzle for shaping into the stands.

  • Patent number: 4347229
Abstract: There is provided a pyrogenic process for the production of finely divided oxide of a metal and/or a metalloid in which there is employed as the starting material a vaporizable halogen compound of a metal and/or metalloid. Because of the starting material there is formed elemental halogen which is an impurity in the oxide formed. To remove the halogen there is supplied to the cooling section of the production plant a mixture of hydrogen and inert gas.

  • Patent number: 4258023
Abstract: In case of the pyrogenous production of metal oxides or metalloid oxides, whenever a halogen compound is used as a starting material, an elementary halogen is formed as a byproduct. This may be converted in the cooling section of the reaction apparatus with hydrogen into hydrogen halide. For a better temperature control and prevention of uncontrolled deflagration of the hydrogen in case of the halogen detonating gas reaction, according to the invention the hydrogen is introduced into the cooling section by means of a double jacket pipe, whereby an inert gas is introduced additionally by way of the interstice between the inside wall and the outside jacket of the double jacket pipe into the cooling section.

  • Patent number: 3954945
Abstract: Process for the production of a finely divided oxide of a metal or silicon by the hydrolytic conversion of a volatile corresponding metal halide or silicon halide in a flame, said process comprising feeding the volatile halide in a mixture with a combustible hydrogen-containing gas and air or oxygen to a burner provided with a mouth emitting a flame, burning the mixture in a fire tube to form a first portion of water vapor, said burner surrounded by an annular chamber forming a nozzle through which hydrogen is passed to keep the mouth of the burner free of attachments of solid substances, the quantity of oxygen or air being sufficient for the practically complete combustion of the combustible gas, and the quantities of oxygen or air and combustible gas being sufficient to produce the first portion of water vapor which will at least suffice for the hydrolysis of the volatile halides, and further wherein said flame is allowed to burn in an atmosphere consisting of gases containing a second portion of water vapo
