  • Patent number: 8488551
Abstract: A method for sending buffer status information includes checking if a quality of service (QoS) parameter is defined for a first logical channel and at least one condition of the set of predetermined conditions associated with a logical channel group is fulfilled. If the QoS parameter is defined and at least one condition of the set is fulfilled, the method includes setting a number of bits in a media access control header according to a first semantic. The bits carry buffer status information, and the first semantic—is based on the QoS parameter of the first logical channel. Otherwise, the method includes setting the number of bits carrying the buffer status information according to a second semantic that is based on an amount of data available for transmission across the logical channel group.

  • Patent number: 8489951
Abstract: A method and apparatus according to the present invention addresses and/or prevents lost protocol synchronization in HARQ systems caused by ACK/NACK errors. One embodiment detects lost synchronization errors for NDI-based retransmission protocols and restores synchronization by sending an explicit RESET message. In response to the RESET message, the transmitter aborts the transmission of a current PDU and transmits a new PDU and corresponding NDI. Another embodiment prevents protocol synchronization errors by sending scheduling grants on a packet by packet basis. The receiver sends a subsequent explicit scheduling grant to the transmitter based on an error evaluation of a received PDU. The transmitter will not send the next PDU unless it receives the subsequent explicit scheduling grant.

  • Patent number: 8462803
Abstract: A method implemented at a user equipment (UE) may include receiving a grant from a base station permitting the user equipment to transmit data to the base station and transmitting data to the base station, where the data includes a buffer status report (BSR) that indicates an amount of data in a buffer of the UE. The method may further include starting or restarting a discontinuous reception (DRX) timer when the data including the BSR is transmitted to the base station. The method may additionally include monitoring (730) a control channel during a duration of the DRX timer. In another implementation, a method may include receiving a feedback message in response to the data transmission including the BSR, and starting or restarting the discontinuous reception (DRX) timer when the feedback message is received. The feedback message may include an acknowledgement (ACK) or a negative acknowledgement (NACK).

  • Patent number: 8429399
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for detecting the start of a secure mode by a user terminal (12) without explicit signaling. After the network (30) commands the user terminal to switch to secure mode and receives a data packet from the user terminal, the receiving network node (22) determines the security mode of the user terminal by determining whether valid security has been applied to the received data packet by the user terminal.

  • Patent number: 8411664
Abstract: A method (500) for a user terminal (120, 130) in a cellular system (100). The user terminal (120, 130) applies (505) a timing advance to transmissions to a controlling node (140). The user terminal (120, 130) requests (510) communication with the controlling node (140) by a special message (MSG 1), in response to which the user terminal (120, 130) receives (515) a message (MSG 2) which includes an updated value for the timing advance. The user terminal (120, 130) compares (520) the updated value with the value of the timing advance that the user terminal had prior to the reception of said response message. If the difference (?) between the prior value and the updated value is greater than a first predetermined threshold (T1) or below a second predetermined threshold (T2), the user terminal (120, 130) ignores (525) the response message (MSG 2) and renews its request for communication.

Abstract: Fields such as sequence numbers and length indicators of protocol layers are extended in extended headers so as to be backwards compatible with corresponding legacy headers. The existing fields of the legacy headers are not directly extended. Instead, existing fields are logically concatenated with other fields of the extended header. Whether the extended fields or legacy fields will be used can be determined dynamically based on current transport block size or semi-statically by higher layers.

  • Patent number: 8380196
Abstract: A method and arrangement for handover wherein the handover resource (the dedicated random access preamble) is reserved by the target radio base station (RBS) for a limited period of time, thus increasing the handover efficiency and thereby allowing random access preambles to be used for initial access to a larger extent. The information about the reserved time interval is sent to the UE in the handover command message by means of a frame number offset between the source RBS and the target RBS. The UE uses the information to calculate when to send its synchronization message to the target RBS. The frame number offset is calculated either by source RBS or by target RBS.

  • Patent number: 8374600
Abstract: The present invention comprises a method and an arrangement for priority handling between a measurement gap procedure and an uplink data transmission procedure in an evolved UTRAN. The user equipment (UE) detects an active measurement gap. When the UE receives data into the transmission buffer the received data triggers an uplink data transmission procedure such as a scheduling request procedure or a random access procedure. An evaluation on characteristics information associated with the received data is performed and based on the performed evaluation the UE proceeds with the uplink data transmission procedure or the measurement gap procedure. In case the characteristics information associated with the received data is of high priority, the UE proceeds with the uplink data transmission procedure and cancels the measurement gap procedure.

  • Publication number: 20120300748
Abstract: In a wireless communication network where base stations receive protocol data units (PDUs) from mobile stations for decompression and deciphering for ordered, sequential transfer as service data units (SDUs) to an associated core network, the teachings presented herein provide a method of supporting seamless handover of a mobile station from a source base station to a target base station. By way of example, the teachings herein apply to a network based on the E-UTRA specifications, as promulgated by the 3GPP. However, that example is non-limiting, as the teachings herein apply to any network that employs in-sequence data delivery and duplicate data detection at handover. Broadly, the source base station forwards out-of-sequence SDUs and corresponding sequence number information to the target base station in support of seamless handover, and the target base station uses that information to request retransmissions as needed for packet reordering.

  • Patent number: 8320333
Abstract: In at least one embodiment taught herein, the point in a packet transmission sequence space at which hyper frame numbers are incremented is changed at least temporarily as part of handover processing, where a mobile station (12) is handed over from a source cell to a target cell. More particularly, in at least one embodiment, changing the triggering point, e.g., changing the transmission sequence number at which HFNs are incremented, is done in a manner that delays a next incrementing of the HFN for a radio bearer that was handed over, therefore giving additional time for the mobile station (12) and the handover target base station (16) to ensure synchronization in the face of possible packet losses in the source and/or target cells arising during the handover event.

  • Publication number: 20120230245
Abstract: A radio access network comprises a donor base station node (29) and a relay base station node (20). The relay base station node (29) participates in communications across a first radio interface with a wireless terminal (30) and also participates in communications over a backhaul link across a second radio interface, the second radio interface reusing at least some functionality of the first interface. The donor base station node (28) configures a subframe configuration pattern. The subframe configuration pattern is arranged to specify which subframe(s) of a frame structure may be utilized for the backhaul link. As a result of subframe configuration, a HARQ process state in a HARQ process at one of the base station nodes is known by the other base station node by any of several operational modes.

  • Patent number: 8098673
Abstract: A User Equipment UE sends a PDP context activation request with an invalid APN to an SGSN. When detecting an invalid APN the SGSN creates a PDP context activation request towards a GGSN and inserts a default APN. The GGSN detects the default APN and sends a RADIUS Accounting request message to a Device Management System DMS. The DMS initiates a device management configuration flow towards the UE using IP over the existing PDP context or an SMS bearer and responds with a RADIUS Accounting response message to the GGSN. When the RADIUS Accounting response message is received the GGSN will initiate a successful Create PDP context response towards the SGSN causing a successful PDP Context Activation Response towards the UE. An advantage of the invention is that it can detect devices having no GPRS configuration and devices having a faulty GPRS configuration.
