  • Publication number: 20070139946
Abstract: An LED unit for a vehicle lamp assembly. The LED unit is comprised of a housing, one or more LEDs, a light pipe, and an optic structure. The housing contains the LEDs and has the light pipe extending therefrom. The light pipe is sized sufficiently narrow for extending through a hole formed in a base portion of the vehicle lamp assembly. The light pipe is attached to an optic structure. The vehicle lamp assembly transmits light in a unilateral direction distal to the housing through the light pipe and the optic structure. The optic structure scatters light in a series of directions distal to the housing.

  • Patent number: 5475571
Abstract: A ring light collector having a light source with a plurality of light pipes is located in a fixed relation with the light source. Each light pipe has a face which collectively substantially form a ring having a predetermined width between an inner diameter and an outer diameter. A concave reflecting surface having an axis of symmetry is fixed relative to the light source and plurality of light pipes. The concave reflecting surface extends in a rotated ellipsoidal fashion and is defined by the outermost surface of an ellipsoid having a major axis forming a predetermined angle with the axis of symmetry. The major axis of the ellipsoid is rotated about the axis of symmetry. The first focal point of the ellipsoid is located a predetermined distance from said axis of symmetry and a second focal point is located substantially between the outer diameter and inner diameter of the ring. The light source is located substantially at the first focal point.

  • Patent number: 5428509
Abstract: A light collector which includes a light pipe having a face with a center and a diameter. The light pipe also has a predetermined acceptance angle. The light source is located a predetermined distance from the light pipe positioned on a line perpendicular to the center of the face of the light pipe. A concave surface defined by a plurality of ellipsoidal sections having a common first focus and a common second focus is used to reflect light from the light source to the light pipe. The ellipsoidal section have decreasing eccentricities with increasing object angle along the concave surface. The light source is located substantially at the first focus of the plurality of ellipsoidal sections and the center of the face of the light pipe is located substantially at the second focus. The surface has an eccentricity such that light rays emitted from the light source reflected by the surface to the light pipe do not exceed the acceptance angle of the light pipe.

  • Patent number: 5406462
Abstract: An apparatus includes a reflective surface for high efficiency collection, transmission and emission of light. Light collected by an ellipsoidal and hyperboloidal portion of the reflective surface is directed into a light guide. Additionally, a paraboloidal portion may be added and used in combination with a lens element to distribute the light reflected by the reflective surface in a beam pattern. When used as an emitter lens profile is smaller than the overall diameter of the reflective surface. When used as a collector, the reflective surface receives and concentrates light onto the end of a light pipe.

  • Patent number: 5365412
Abstract: A illuminator for use on a vehicle utilizing light from a remote light source. A semi-paraboloidal reflector collects and collimates light from the remote light source which is transmitted to the semi-paraboloidal reflector through a light guide, such as a fiber optic light pipe. Light from the reflector is reflected outward through a plurality of reflective facets to form a light beam.
