Patent number: 8700069Abstract: A method and system for calculating the location of a mobile radio terminal in a radio communications network. The method provides for the collection of measurements of radio signal parameters at the mobile radio terminal which are then processed and transmitted to a network processor for calculating the location of the mobile radio terminal. The collected measurements may be filtered and subsets of the measurements may also be selected according to their suitability for particular applications.Type: GrantFiled: April 10, 2006Date of Patent: April 15, 2014Assignee: WaveMarket, Inc.Inventors: Malcolm MacNaughtan, Christopher Ridgway Drane, Stephen Brown, Craig Andrew Scott

Patent number: 8463285Abstract: Methods and systems for determining whether a mobile radio terminal is on or out of a zone in a radio communications network. The methods and systems provide for generating a profile representative of the zone using measurements taken by the mobile radio terminal and/or the network and/or using predicted values. A comparison is then made between subsequent measurements or values and the profile to make a determination as to whether the mobile radio terminal is in or out of the zone. The methods and systems are applicable to any zone-based application including differential call charging, security applications, buddy finder services, mobile gaming and location based services in general.Type: GrantFiled: April 10, 2006Date of Patent: June 11, 2013Assignee: WaveMarket, Inc.Inventors: Malcolm MacNaughtan, Christopher Ridgway Drane, Craig Andrew Scott, Stephen Brown

Patent number: 8359044Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for locating a mobile radio terminal in a radio communications network. The method makes use of additional positional constraints provided as a result of unreported cells. In one form of the invention, a likely reason for a particular cell not being reported is determined and an associated probability term is determined for use in a position location model. The invention also relates to a system for implementing the method.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 2006Date of Patent: January 22, 2013Assignee: WaveMarket, Inc.Inventors: Malcolm MacNaughtan, Christopher Ridgway Drane, Craig Andrew Scott

Publication number: 20090047973Abstract: A method for obtaining a local path loss versus range model in a radio communications network is disclosed. The method comprises obtaining at least one path loss measurement and an associated range measurement at an approximated location of a mobile radio terminal within the radio communications network and applying this to a path loss versus range model to obtain the local path loss versus range model. The local model may also be used to obtain a more accurate location of the mobile radio terminal within the radio communications network.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 20, 2006Publication date: February 19, 2009Applicant: Seeker Wireless Pty. LimitedInventors: Malcolm MacNaughtan, Christopher R. Drane, Craig A. Scott

Publication number: 20060217127Abstract: A method and apparatus for finding a radio terminal (10) in a radio communications network. The method includes making observations of attributes of radio signals associated with the radio terminal (10) and generating a route for a seeker (20) to find the radio terminal (10), based on the observations and estimated error distributions of those observations. The route may be displayed over a topographical map to guide the seeker to the target.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 22, 2004Publication date: September 28, 2006Applicant: Seeker Wireless Pty LimitedInventors: Christopher Drane, Malcolm Macnaughtan

Publication number: 20050259763Abstract: The invention provides a method of estimating the time offsets between signals transmitted by plural transmitters of a communications network and received by a receiver attached to a terminal. In the method a section of a representation of the signals from the plural transmitters received by the receiver at the terminal (a “terminal section”) is created as are a first section of a representation of the signal transmitted by a first of said transmitters and a second section of a representation of the signal transmitted by a second of said transmitters. Each of the first and second sections overlaps in time with the terminal section. Using the first section, the second section and a set of signal parameters, including initial estimates of the time offsets between the first section and the terminal section and between the second section and the terminal section, a model of a section of a representation of the composite signal received by the receiver from the first and second transmitters is created.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 18, 2003Publication date: November 24, 2005Applicant: CAMBRIDE POSTITOINING SYSTEMS LIMITEDInventors: Peter Duffett-Smith, Malcolm MacNaughtan, Christopher Clarke, Robert Rowe

Publication number: 20050200525Abstract: The present invention sets out to overcome the hearability problem in CDMA communications networks in which positioning services are provided, by using a separate sampling device (204, 205, 206) for each transmitter (201, 202, 203), which sends to the computing device (208) a representation of the signals transmitted only by that transmitter. A cross-correlation of the representation sent back by the mobile terminal (207) with the representation sent back by the sampling device in the brightest transmitter is performed in the computing device (208), and a blurred estimate of that brightest signal is subtracted from a blurred version of the representation sent back by the mobile terminal (207) in order to reduce its effect on the remaining signals as far as possible. The cross-correlation and subtraction steps are iterated until no useful signals remain to be extracted.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 13, 2003Publication date: September 15, 2005Inventors: Peter Duffett-Smith, Malcolm Macnaughtan, John Clarke, Robert Rowe
