Publication number: 20210097522Abstract: A point of sale (POS) device includes a nest portion and a cradle portion. The nest portion includes one or more payment card or near field communication (NFC) readers. The cradle portion couples to differently-sized interchangeable frames, which in turn help secure a mobile computing device to the cradle portion of the POS device. The mobile computing device is connected via a connector to the rest of the POS device. Payment card information read by the readers is conveyed to the mobile computing device over the connector for processing. The POS device may also include tamper detection circuitry.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 11, 2020Publication date: April 1, 2021Inventors: Jeremy Martin, Mani Razaghi Kashani, Nicholas Kunst, Brett Andler, Steven Stallion, Rowan Schultz, Yenliang Chen, Cory Douthat

Patent number: 10410021Abstract: A card reader includes a digital connector such as a Universal Serial Bus (USB) plug or an Apple® Lightning® plug. The digital connector includes a corresponding connector interface, which provides voltage to at least a card reader interface and an integrated circuit (IC) of the card reader. The card reader interface outputs an analog transaction information signal upon reading the card. The IC generates a digital version of the analog transaction information signal, encrypts the digital version, converts that into an analog audio signal. The audio signal can then be sent to the connector interface, which converts it into a digital signal such as a USB or Apple® Lightning® signal that is sent by the digital connector to a mobile device. Alternately, the audio signal can be sent to a microcontroller that converts the audio signal to a digital format such as USB, and then to the digital connector.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 2017Date of Patent: September 10, 2019Assignee: SQUARE, INC.Inventors: Mani Razaghi, Joseph Laucks, Jeremy Martin

Publication number: 20190147197Abstract: A circuit board is protected by being enclosed in a security housing that includes conductive tamper traces running along its interior surface, the conductive tamper traces being a housing portion of a tamper detection circuit. The tamper detection circuit also includes a board portion that detect tampering with the tamper detection circuit by monitoring voltages at monitor nodes along the board portion. The board portion of the tamper detection circuit is connected to the tamper traces via multiple connector pieces. The connector pieces can be held in place by board connector piece holders affixed to the board or housing connector piece holders of the housing. When tampering is detected, it can be localized based on voltages measured at multiple recesses along the housing. The tamper detection circuit can be arranged in a wheatstone bridge layout for environmental tolerance. The circuit board's functions/components can be disabled if tampering is detected.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 16, 2019Publication date: May 16, 2019Inventor: Mani Razaghi

Patent number: 10182328Abstract: A payment object reader or POS device tracks performance of a wireless transceiver. In response to detection of a dip in performance of the wireless transceiver, the payment object reader or POS device retunes the wireless transceiver, enables a first subsystem of the payment object reader or POS device from a disabled state, transmits a notification indicating a defect, or identifies a tamper attempt. Sensor measurements and other actions within the payment object reader or POS device can be correlated with wireless transceiver underperformance and used to predict actions to take.Type: GrantFiled: June 12, 2017Date of Patent: January 15, 2019Assignee: Square, Inc.Inventors: Matthew H. Patent number: 9843133Abstract: Connector inserts having latches, bayonets, or similar structures as retention features. The connector inserts may include these bayonets on one or more sides or other portions of the connector insert. The bayonets may be located inside of a connector insert while the connector insert is being inserted into a receptacle, thereby reducing wear and marring of the receptacle. The bayonets may extend out of a connector insert when the connector insert is inserted into the connector receptacle and may engage corresponding retention features in the connector receptacle, thereby reducing the chances of an inadvertent disconnection. When the bayonets are located inside the connector insert, the connector insert may be in a first state, while when the bayonets are extended, the connector insert may be in a second state. The connector insert may retain state in either the first or second state in the absence of a user applied force.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 2015Date of Patent: December 12, 2017Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Mani Razaghi Kashani, Paul J.
