  • Publication number: 20020147830
Abstract: A method and structure for determining when a frame of information comprised of one or more buffers of data being transmitted in a network processor has completed transmission is provided. The network processor includes a plurality of control blocks, one for each data buffer, each containing control information to link one buffer to another for transmission. Each of the control blocks has a last bit feature which is a single bit and indicates when the data buffer having the last bit is transmitted. This last bit feature is a bit which can be set to either zero or one. The last bit feature is in a first position when an additional data buffer is to be chained to a previous data buffer indicating an additional data buffer is to be transmitted and a second position when no additional data buffer is to be chained to a previous data buffer.

  • Patent number: 6463500
Abstract: A method is provided for utilizing a memory system which allows for the fast and efficient writing and reading of objects to and from diverse memory chips. A computer system and memory system complex according to method is also provided. The invention defines objects in terms of “shapes.” The shape of an object is defined by two parameters: “Width” and “Height.” Memory system memory chips may comprise sets of different kinds of memory modules which vary in terms of access speed, latency and memory width, such as for example DRAM or SRAM memory modules. The Height of an object denotes the number of consecutive address locations at which the object is stored on a memory module. The Width of an object denotes the number of memory modules at which the object is stored. An advantage of the invention is that objects are defined in terms of “sub-objects” optimized for the memory system memory modules.

  • Publication number: 20020141256
Abstract: A Network Processor (NP) includes a controller that allows maximum utilization of the memory. The controller includes a memory arbiter that monitors memory access requests from requesters in the NP and awards high priority requesters all the memory bandwidth requested per access to the memory. If the memory bandwidth requested by the high priority requester is less than the full memory bandwidth, the difference between the requested bandwidth and full memory bandwidth is assigned to lower priority requesters. By so doing every memory access utilizes the full memory bandwidth.

  • Patent number: 6449576
Abstract: A method and system for systematically accessing and monitoring operating parameter signals within an IC device. A probe configuration logic selects a subset of signals from among a set of available signals within a physical or logical subdivision of the IC device. Signal access logic selectively provides physical or logical access from the selected subset of signals within the physical or logical subdivision of the IC device to a probe sensor, such that IC device operations may be flexibly and comprehensively monitored. A local mode selector provides remote access to the selected subset of signals at an input/output (I/O) data interface. Data packaging logic in communication with the probe sensor permits port mirroring of the I/O data interface.

  • Publication number: 20020118694
Abstract: A method and system for reducing memory accesses by inserting qualifiers in control blocks. In one embodiment, a system comprises a processor configured to process frames of data. The processor may comprise a plurality of buffers configured to store frames of data where each frame of data may be associated with a frame control block. Each frame control block associated with a frame of data may be associated with one or more buffer control blocks. Each control block, e.g., frame control block, buffer control block, may comprise one or more qualifier fields that comprise information unrelated to the current control block. Instead, qualifiers may comprise information related to an another control block. The last frame control block in a queue as well as the last buffer control block associated with a frame control block may comprise fields with no information thereby reducing memory accesses to access information in those fields.

  • Publication number: 20020071321
Abstract: A Network Processor includes a Fat Pipe Port and a memory sub-system that provides sufficient data to satisfy the Bandwidth requirements of the Fat Pipe Port. The memory subsystem includes a plurality of DDR DRAMs controlled so that data is extracted from one DDR DRAM or simultaneously from a plurality of the DDR DRAMs. By controlling the DDR DRAMs so that the outputs provide data serially or in parallel, the data Bandwidth is adjustable over a wide range. Similarly, data is written serially into one DDR DRAM or simultaneously into multiple DDR DRAMs. As a consequence buffers with data from the same frame are written into or read from different DDR DRAMs.

  • Patent number: 6298340
Abstract: A classification system includes a software managed tree testing bits from a key which labels an item. The bits are chosen by application of the Choice Bit Algorithm to the Rules in a Database of Rules. A controller including logic parses an unknown Key for bits to be tested in the decision nodes of a binary tree. Tests dictated by the tree are conducted in a predetermined way until all but one Rule from the database or all but a few Rules from the database are eliminated from consideration, whereupon the Key is fully tested by the one remaining Rule or in a lattice constructed of the remaining plurality of Rules, to determine an action to enforce on the item. Certain compare tests are used in the binary tree for the case that otherwise identical or similar rules are applied to integer ranges of key values which do not fall upon power of 2 boundaries.
