    Abstract: A transmission system and method with improved failure resilience is disclosed. The transmission system for transmitting data includes an Ethernet network portion, a transport network portion and a switching component coupling said Ethernet network portion with said transport network portion. The Ethernet network portion includes at least two Ethernet line cards each with at least one Ethernet interface for providing redundant communication links within the Ethernet network portion. The Ethernet line cards are configured to transmit information regarding the status of their at least one Ethernet interface to the switching component and the switching component is configured to receive and analyze information regarding the status of the Ethernet interfaces of the Ethernet line cards and route the data to the transport network portion based on said received information.

    Abstract: A method of processing information packets is disclosed which is adapted for a telecommunication apparatus comprising first processing means, second processing means and memory means. This method comprises the steps of: A) receiving an information packet from a telecommunication network by means of the first processing means; B) checking whether the value of a predetermined characteristic of this packet has already been processed by the second processing means; C) if the check at step B) is negative, checking whether this value has already been stored into the memory means; and D) if the check at step C) is negative, transmitting this value from the first processing means to the memory means and storing this value into the memory means. This method can advantageously be used in a telecommunication apparatus, particularly a layer-2 switch machine.

In the inverse translation process, the selected address (a(j)) is received and the memory is accessed updating again the time information by inserting the current instant and/or date.

    Abstract: A system for structuring information outputted at a variable bit rate from a video signal encoder and for organizing the information into information units or packets. The information packets are compatible for transmission and processing by packet transmission networks such as asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), capable of sending transmission data streams at variable speed. In a preferred embodiment, the system uses an encoder that comprises video units. Each video unit contains information classified into three distinct classes. Each video unit is associated with a video packet comprising a header and a body. Each of the three distinct classes of information associated with a video unit uses a different technique for tho providing protection of that information against transmission errors and/or information packet loss.

    Abstract: A system which permits a color television signal to be efficiently encoded by a unidimensional or bidimensional transform. The color television signal input to the system is sampled using a variable frequency sampling clock, and the sampled signal is digitally processed. The result is three signals having statistical characteristics similar to the individual component signals of the original color television signal. These resultant signals are encoded to obtain a highly compressed color television signal for transmission.
