  • Publication number: 20120104068
Abstract: A triple roll entry guide where the guide has two sets of operation, a first which operates as a standard triple roller entry guide. Here the guide functions as a standard guide wherein three levers are pivoted about a work product axis to guide the work product into the reduction rolls of the mill. The guide will accept a predetermined size range of work products. In this instance the rollers of the guide overcome the force holding the levers in their usual working position and force the levers to assume a new position which the work product is accepted in the guide. This is the second method of operation, and in it the levers of the guide are “preloaded” so that the guide functions as a standard guide under prescribed conditions. Under conditions which lead to the acceptance of a work product of a larger diameter in the predetermined size range the levers of the guide overcome the force which limits the maximum position of the levers of the guide and the work product is accepted by the guide.

  • Publication number: 20120073344
Abstract: A cooler that is easily dis-assembled is disclosed here. The cooler has two halves which co-operate together to form a cooling passage way to cool a steel work product as it passes through the cooler. A pair of tubular half sections are fastened to each half section to expose the passage way when the two halves are separated. A steel work product normally passes through this passage way. If the steel work product should break during a rolling process then the cooler is removed and opened for inspection.

  • Patent number: 8006780
Abstract: A drilling bit for penetrating an iceberg a predetermined distance to establish an anchor point for towing the iceberg to a predetermined location. The drilling bit has three sections for achieving its goal. It has a cutting head, a torque transmission body and a driving end for coupling to a power-twisting device which energizes the bit. The bit has separate passageways therein to permit the bit to remove water and ice produced by the cutting head during a drilling operation. The drill has a passageway for circulating liquid nitrogen therein to cause the water remaining in the hole to freeze to the drill bit solidly into the iceberg. The drill bit is also provided with a heating coil resistor to melt the area where the bit is held captive by the frozen ice.

  • Patent number: 7257976
Abstract: A hollow cooling box for a steel mill to be used to cool a hot steel work piece as it passes through the cooling box; the box having an interior plenum formed by the members forming the cooling box. The plenum is supplied with coolant under pressure, and the coolant is allowed to pass through curved wedge shaped slots in one of the members which faces the work piece as it passes through the cooling box. The wedge shaped slots are oriented so that the widest part of said slot is on the upstream side of the passage of the work piece.

  • Patent number: 7221442
Abstract: An alignment device for aligning guiding apparatus with the main axis of a rolling mill comprising a camera and a video display communicating with the camera. The camera is mounted in the steel mill at the position of the guiding apparatus and the camera is moved until it is on the axis of the mill. The camera is then removed to a bench which duplicates the physical characteristics of the mill. The guiding apparatus is mounted on the bench adjacent the camera. The guiding apparatus is physically moved until it is located on the camera axis, which is the mill axis. The guiding apparatus is then remounted in the mill.

  • Publication number: 20070051154
Abstract: A method of clamping and locking a roll for a steel mill on a driving pinion comprising applying a side thrust force against a roller to clamp it against a shoulder on the pinion whilst applying the reaction force produced by the side thrust force to cause a plug located in a cavity in the pinion beneath the roll to move sideways. The plug is provided with threads which when the plug is moved sideways produces a wedging action which expands the mounting surface on which the roll is mounted to lock the roll on the driving pinion.

  • Patent number: 6280087
Abstract: A guide for a high speed steel rolling mill comprises two rolling members, between which the work product passes mounted for rotation on a base member. Each roller has a frusto-conically shaped bearing recess formed therein and each guide roller is mounted on a mating, frusto-conically shaped projection which protrudes from the base member. Each of the projections has a central oil duct which serves to feed a lubricating oil under pressure into the frusto-conically shaped space between the roller and its mating projection. The lubricating oil serves to form a film between the stationary projection and the rotating guide roller. Because of the conically shaped mating surface, the lubricating oil tends to “lift” the guide roller from the surface of the supporting base. Each rolling member is provided with a vane structure to permit the rolling member to be prespun by the impingement of a cooling fluid on the vane surface thereof.

  • Patent number: 6151946
Abstract: A roller for a steel mill entry guide in which pockets are formed in at least one of the flat annular surfaces on the side of the roller. The pockets are used to intersect a stream of moving fluid projected at the surface of the roller containing the pockets to force the rollers to rotate whilst no work is passing through the guide. The pockets are of a rectangular shape and are easy to fabricate and have no preferential direction of rotation.

  • Patent number: 6092408
Abstract: A steel billet is reduced to a bar in a hot steel mill rolling operation by plural reductions successively produced by passage of a workpiece through a series of reducing mill stands. Each mill stand produces a workpiece having a rhombic shaped cross sectional configuration during a reduction passage through each mill stand. The plastic deformation of the workpiece produced by the rollers in each mill stand not only reduces the cross sectional area of the workpiece but also reverses the major and minor axes of the rhombic cross section of the workpiece during passage through each mill stand.

  • Patent number: 6050122
Abstract: A slitter for a steel mill comprising a pair of spaced rollers having a predetermined surface configurations. A deeply grooved steel workpiece is passed through the gap in the spaced rollers and each section of the workpiece (between the grooves) is twisted through a small angle. Because each section is twisted in the same direction, the workpiece fractures along each groove in the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 5937689
Abstract: An entry guide device comprising a funnel shaped inlet member in close proximity to three adjustable rollers mounted at 120.degree. around the axis of work moving through the entry guide device. The adjustable rollers are actuated to move in concert so as to be able to accommodate a work product of difference diameters, whilst preserving the concentricity of the three rollers. The funnel shaped inlet member is replaceable to accommodate for wear and provision is made to calibrate the position of the three movable rollers with a calibration device which may be conveniently inserted into the device to check and calibrate the three rollers for concentricity. This entry guide device is ideally suited for guiding a work produce having circular, triangular or hexagonal cross-sections.

  • Patent number: 5911784
Abstract: An assembly for producing a finished shape for a rod after the last rolling stage of a multi stand steel mill. This apparatus provides an operation for correcting minor surface irregularities and shape distortion of the rod as it exits from the finishing roll stand. The apparatus consists of four rollers mounted in an assembly which resembles a roller entry guide except that the rollers are capable of producing changes in shape of a work product passing therethrough. The orientation of the roller axis is slowly and constantly changed to prevent wear distortion of the rollers which may result when the rollers are required to roll a malformed product from fixed roller axes. The rollers may be driven in some circumstances.

  • Patent number: 5700233
Abstract: Apparatus for mounting a mill roll on a mill drive shaft in which mounting concentricity is produced by the internal expansion of the drive shaft to engage the bore of the mill roll. A secondary clamping device provides additional lateral binding force on the mill roll necessary for the production of the required frictional forces for the transmission of driving torque from the shaft to the mill roll.
