  • Patent number: 4477245
Abstract: A flame monitor for a burner comprises an oscillator which generates a signal at a characteristic frequency, a flame modulator connected to the oscillator and the burner for modulating the flame which produces an electromagnetic signal at the same frequency and a signal detector for detecting the electromagnetic signal. A bandpass filter is connected to the detector for passing only the signal at the characteristic frequency. Circuitry is provided for detecting the intensity of the electromagnetic signal which is proportional to the flame temperature and which can be used to control the fuel or air supplied to the burner and thus optimize the flame. A single detector can be used to detect the flame from various burners where each burner is supplied with its own characteristic frequency and the detector is multiplexed to share its operation over the various burners.

  • Patent number: 4470019
Abstract: Circuitry for extracting the square root of an incoming voltage signal is disclosed. The circuit (10) utilizes a four-bit up/down counter (14) to control the output duty cycle of a pair of four-bit rate multipliers (16, 18) connected in a cascaded configuration. The output of the second rate multiplier (18), which is related to the square of the up/down counter value, is used to control the mode of the counter (14) so as to track the incoming voltage signal. Inasmuch as the square of the up/down counter value is tracking the incoming voltage signal, the output duty cycle of the first rate multiplier (16) in the cascaded pair is the square root of the incoming voltage signal which is subsequently converted into analog form. The circuit also utilizes a "dithering" technique so that the resulting square root output signal has greater than four-bit accuracy.

  • Patent number: 4466296
Abstract: A force transducer for producing an output signal proportional to the magnitude of an input force having a force receiving base cantilevered from a fixed base through a leaf spring flexure assembly which is provided with means for anchoring the opposite ends of a removable spring flexure in the fixed and force receiving bases respectively to thereby adjust the transducer to a predetermined force range.

  • Patent number: 4462261
Abstract: A device is disclosed for measuring the mass and velocity of a fluid flowing in a conduit, in a flow direction, which comprises a pair of signal transducer arrays each disposed at planes extending through the conduit and spaced in the flow direction. Each transducer of each array is adapted to transmit a signal and receive all signals of all other transducers so that a variety of signal paths are established through the flow both transversely to the flow and in the flow direction. Differences in transit times between arrays are used to measure velocity and attenuation of the signal within an array are used to determine density. The density and velocity measurements are combined to determine mass flow.

  • Patent number: 4450722
Abstract: A water level gauge with fault detector comprises a column for containing a level of water with a plurality of light sources on one side of the column and a plurality of detector assemblies on an opposite side of the column. Filters are utilized to project red and green light through the column. Each detector assembly includes a red detector and a green detector with red and green filters respectively. Due to the difference in offset of light beams transversing the column at an oblique angle through water and through air, the green detector is activated by green light when the green and red light passes through the water in the column and the red detector is activated when the light passes through air in the column, that is, above the water level in the column. By a circuit connected to each detector assembly, it is possible to discover the level of water in the column.

  • Patent number: 4435650
Abstract: A load control for a system comprised of a plurality of energy converters wherein a System Control Signal proportional to system load is developed and utilized to simultaneously adjust the rate of energy conversion of each of the converters in parallel in accordance with changes in system load. The rate of energy conversion for each converter, while operating under stead-state conditions for a predetermined period of time, is readjusted until its actual incremental cost of production is equal to a desired incremental cost.

  • Patent number: 4430573
Abstract: A load control for a system comprised of a plurality of energy converters wherein increases in total energy demand from the system is compensated by increasing only the rate of energy conversion of that converter producing energy conversion at least cost and decreases in total energy demand from the system is compensated by decreasing only the rate of energy conversion of that converter producing energy conversion at highest cost.

  • Patent number: 4303982
Abstract: A system for the measurement and control of the rate of BTU input to a gas burner wherein a signal is generated corresponding to the square root of the product of the burner inlet pressure multiplied by the in-situ density olf the gas, which, multiplied by a signal of constant value, corresponds to the mass flow of gas to the burner. This signal is then multiplied by a second signal of constant value to generate a signal corresponding to the rate of BTU input to the burner and which is compared with a set point signal to regulate the mass flow of gas to the burner as required to maintain the rate of BTU input to the burner at set point.
