  • Patent number: 11187800
Abstract: A weather radar module includes a memory, a vertical weather display, and a processor. The vertical weather display is configured to display weather in a vertical format. The processor is configured to control a radar antenna of the aircraft to perform a sweep in the horizontal direction and receive horizontal sweep radar returns, determine first weather parameters of a weather model in the vertical format based on the horizontal sweep radar returns, and store the first weather parameters in the memory. The processor is further configured to provide an estimate of the weather in the vertical format based on fusing vertical weather data, which is based on the vertical sweep radar returns, with the first weather parameters in the memory or with vertical display data based on the first weather parameters, and cause the vertical weather display to display the estimate of the weather in the vertical format.

  • Patent number: 10605912
Abstract: A weather radar system includes a non-transitory processor-readable medium that causes a processor to control a radar antenna to conduct a vertical radar scan of a weather cell over a vertical scan area and first and second horizontal scan segments of a horizontal radar scan over first and second horizontal scan areas; receive radar return data indicative of a characteristic of each scan area; determine a first and second altitude of a storm top of the weather cell for first and second locations based on the characteristic of a scan area; and cause a display device to display storm top height data indicative of the storm top of the weather cell based on the radar return data. The first horizontal scan segment is conducted at the first altitude and the second horizontal scan segment is conducted at the second altitude and with a higher resolution than the other radar scans.

  • Patent number: 10061024
Abstract: A weather radar module for an aircraft is described. The weather radar module includes a weather display and a processor. The processor is configured to control a radar antenna of the aircraft to perform a radar beam sweep and to receive radar returns. The processor is further configured to perform an estimation of a weather vertical location based on the radar returns, the estimation comprising estimating an altitude error correction due to a beam shape of the radar beam and due to weather model parameters of a weather model and correcting for the altitude error correction. The processor is further configured to cause the weather display to display weather based on the received radar returns, and the estimation of the weather vertical location.

  • Patent number: 9499278
Abstract: A aircraft hazard warning system or method can be utilized to determine a location of turbulence, hail or other hazard for an aircraft. A processor can process weather radar data representative of weather conditions. An avionic display can display graphical elements representing the weather conditions in response to the processor. The display can provide at least one first graphical element representing a size and a location of the turbulence at a first level. The display can provide at least one second graphical element representing a size and a location of the turbulence at a second level. The size of the second graphical element can have a minimal displayable size and/or can be determined using an inflation factor.

  • Patent number: 9411044
Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer-readable media relating to providing weather data generated by a weather radar system of an aircraft are provided. The method includes receiving radar returns from at least one of a horizontal radar scan and a vertical radar scan. The method includes detecting a plurality of weather cells based on at least one of the horizontal radar scan and the vertical radar scan. The method includes providing display data representative of the plurality of weather cells. The method includes automatically providing updated display data representative of the plurality of weather cells based on at least one of an additional horizontal radar scan and an additional vertical radar scan.

  • Patent number: 9244157
Abstract: A method and system can display images associated with core threats, associated threats, and/or predictive overflight threats. The images of the weather can be displayed using at least a first color, a second color, and a third color associated with a respective first precipitation rate range, a second respective precipitation rate range, and a third respective precipitation rate range. The first precipitation rate range is less than the second precipitation rate range and the third precipitation rate range is more than the second precipitation rate range. The core threats, associated threats and predictive overflight threats can be displayed using the first, second and third colors, speckled areas, and wedge-shaped symbols.

  • Patent number: 9057773
Abstract: Systems and methods for displaying weather data relating to weather near an aircraft are provided. A method includes generating a three-dimensional weather profile of the weather near the aircraft based on reflectivity data from radar returns of a weather radar system of the aircraft. Generating the three-dimensional weather profile includes estimating weather data above a freezing layer height using a function that is based on a rate of reduction in reflectivity above the freezing layer. The method further includes transmitting weather display data to a display device, the weather display data being configured to cause the display device to display a visual representation of the three-dimensional weather profile.

  • Patent number: 9019145
Abstract: A weather radar system is coupled to a weather radar antenna. The weather radar system includes a processor for combining or summing portions of the radar return data to obtain a null. The processor associates the null with the ground (e.g., steers the null toward ground or processes data so that the null corresponds to ground) to obtain a null to alleviate ground clutter when sensing weather. The null can be a single null or multiple nulls associated with different ranges.
