  • Patent number: 7046642
Abstract: A method and apparatus for dynamically configuring parameters of the radio link protocol layer in a telecommunications system. The method and apparatus allows dynamic configuration of the radio link protocol layer in order to optimize parameters for use with a particular data service. In an embodiment of the invention, radio link protocol control frames used for connection initialization include RLP parameter data. The RLP parameter data is exchanged between two communicating transceiving devices during connection initialization, and is used in each transceiving device to configure subsequently transmitted RLP data frames and transmit retransmission requests accordingly.

  • Publication number: 20050169171
Abstract: An approach is provided for supporting end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) control. A QoS profile identifier is generated that maps to a QoS parameter. The identifier is transmitted over the radio communication system to an end station, wherein the end station determines the QoS parameter based on the received identifier. The approach also provides an alert mechanism in which the end station transmits an alert message upon detecting a deviation from the QoS parameter.

  • Publication number: 20050111358
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for generating a TVMAR (traffic volume measurement and reporting) report, or other appropriate report, to facilitate packet scheduling in a packet-based communication system. A signal is generated at a network part of a radio communication system indicative of parameters that the mobile station is to include in the TVMAR report, subsequently to be generated by the mobile station. The signal is generated by a signal generator and sent to the mobile station to be detected thereat by a detector. The communication indicia is measured by a measurer and the measured values of the selected parameters are formed into a TVMAR report and returned to the network part.

  • Publication number: 20050047335
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for reporting QoS information associated with a reverse link communication service effectuated in a radio communication system, such as a CDMA2000 cellular communication system. The mobile station includes a service quality level selector that selects a selected service quality level, such as a communication rate, at which the communication service is to be effectuated. The mobile station further selectably includes a message generator that generates a service quality indication message. A detector detects the scheduling architecture of a network part of the communication system with which the mobile station communicates. And, information contained in the message generated by the message generator is dependent, in part, upon the scheduling architecture.

  • Publication number: 20050007968
Abstract: The invention is a process and system for controlling selection of which MS is to receive the next packet data transmission on a forward channel and selection of which plural MCS is to be used for the packet data transmissions on the forward channel. A process for controlling selection of MCS method to be used by a BTS (10) to transmit data packets over a forward shared channel to a MS (12) in accordance with the invention stores information at the BTS, the information containing MCS methods which may be selected to transmit data packets over the forward shared channel to the MS; receiving from the MS at the BTS a quality indication of transmission of data packets over the forward channel to the MS; and selecting a MCS method from a plurality of MCS methods which may be used to transmit data packets on the forward channel dependent upon the received quality indication.

  • Publication number: 20050002363
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for a frame-formatted radio communication system. Coordination is provided between MAC and RLP layers of a sending station through use of apparatus embodied at the MAC layer of the sending station. Also, apparatus is provided at a receiving station to reduce the generation of RLP layer NAK during segmented RLP frame retransmissions.

  • Patent number: 6473419
Abstract: State apparatus, and an associated method, controls a packet data service in a radio communication system in which a mobile station is operable. Control architecture is represented by operational states in which the mobile station is caused to be operated includes a control hold power save substate and a virtual traffic substate. Subsequent to a selected period of communication inactivity, the operational state of the mobile station in caused to be transitioned into a control hold power save substate in which a dedicated control channel remains allocated to the mobile station. If packet data is subsequently to be communicated by the mobile station, the channel is readily available to the mobile station to communicate the packet data thereon. When, conversely, subsequent to a period of communication inactivity, operation of the mobile station is caused to be transitioned into the virtual traffic channel substate, a communication channel is released from its allocation to the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 6393008
Abstract: A method and system for transmitting packet data over a cellular telecommunications network is presented. A novel medium access control (MAC) logical layer is implemented between a service option layer and multiplex sublayer. The MAC layer handles the multiple accesses of packet users over selected dedicated traffic channels. The MAC layer provides a multiple access control function for packet data users only. Users requiring only circuit switched services (voice calls) are not serviced through the MAC layer multiple access control function. If a user has simultaneous circuit switched and packet data services operating, the MAC layer multiple access control function handles the packet data services, while the circuit switched services are handled simultaneously by bypassing the MAC layer multiple access control function.
