    Abstract: A configuration database includes multiple databases distributed at a plurality of physical locations within a process control system. Each of the databases may store a subset of the configuration data and this subset of configuration data may be accessed by users at any of the sites within the process control system. A database server having a shared cache accesses a database in a manner that enables multiple subscribers to read configuration data from the database with only a minimal number of reads to the database. To prevent the configuration data being viewed by subscribers within the process control system from becoming stale, the database server automatically detects changes to an item within the configuration database and sends notifications of changes made to the item to each of the subscribers of that item so that a user always views the state of the configuration as it actually exists within the configuration database.

Each module class object generically models or represents a process entity, such as a unit, a piece of equipment, a control activity, etc., and may be used to create instances of the object, called module objects, which represent and are tied to specific equipment within the process plant. The module class objects may represent process entities of any desired scope, which means that a single module class object may be used to configure the control and display activities of process entities of any desired scope within the process plant, instead of just at a control module level. In particular, module class objects of a large scope may be used to configure large sections or portions of the process plant, which makes configuration of the process plant easier and less time consuming.

    Abstract: An adaptive multivariable process control system includes a multivariable process controller, such as a model predictive controller, having a multivariable process model characterized as a set of two or more single-input, single-output (SISO) models and an adaptation system which adapts the multivariable process model. The adaptation system detects changes in process inputs sufficient to start an adaptation cycle and, when such changes are detected, collects process input and output data needed to perform model adaptation. The adaptation system next determines a subset of the SISO models within the multivariable process model which are to be adapted, based on, for example, a determination of which process inputs are most correlated with the error between the actual (measured) process output and the process output developed by the multivariable process model. The adaptation system then performs standard or known model switching and parameter interpolation techniques to adapt each of the selected SISO models.
