  • Publication number: 20080252529
Abstract: A dual-polarized antenna, and an associated methodology, is provided for a radio device, such as a mobile station. The antenna is formed of a plurality of patches configured into an array, symmetrical in both a first polarization direction and a second polarization direction. Adjacent patches of the array are interconnected by connecting strips that are also symmetrically positioned in the two directions. These connecting strips not only act as feeding lines for the patches but also operate as in-phase radiation elements in each polarization direction. A transverse strip extends between a pair of transversely positioned patches. And a single feed connection is provided thereat.

  • Publication number: 20080252550
Abstract: A dual-polarized antenna, and an associated methodology, is provided for a radio device, such as a mobile station. The antenna is formed of a plurality of loop strips disposed upon a substrate. The loop strips are configured into a pair of L-cornered loops, with the loops sharing a shared set of loop strips. • Publication number: 20080246678
Abstract: A hybrid slot-strip antenna apparatus, and an associated methodology, for a multi-mode mobile station or other radio device. The antenna is formed of a plurality of slot-strips disposed upon a printed circuit board, or other substrate. The antenna is defined by width and length design parameters, the selections of which are determinative of the antenna functionality. • Publication number: 20080231531
Abstract: Antenna apparatus, and an associated methodology, for a multi-frequency-band-capable radio device, such as a quad-band mobile station. The antenna apparatus forms a hybrid strip antenna having a pair of resonant elements. A first resonant element forms a peripheral loop extending about the periphery of a substrate. A meander line extends along a portion of the peripheral loop. And, second resonant element is formed of an L-shaped strip. The peripheral loop is resonant at a set of frequencies, and the L-shaped strip is resonant at a single frequency. Through appropriate selection of the lengths of the resonant elements, the frequencies at which the elements are resonant are controlled.

  • Publication number: 20080205314
Abstract: A mobile communication device has a wireless transceiver and one or more processors for communicating data in a wireless communication system. The one or more processors are operative to receive a plurality of data packets of varying payload size in a queue; associate one or more of the data packets from the queue into a group, such that a total size of the group is at or near a maximum transmissible unit (MTU) size of a data frame; cause the one or more data packets associated into the group to be formatted into the data frame for data transmission via the wireless transceiver; and repeat, for a plurality of data frames, the associating and formatting, for communicating the data via the wireless transceiver in the wireless communication system. By associating the data packets into groups having the MTU size, data throughput of the data transmission is increased.

  • Publication number: 20080188228
Abstract: A method of cell selection in a wireless cellular network having a plurality of radio system cells involves determining a bandwidth indication for data communication through each of a serving cell and at least one neighbouring cell to the serving cell. The bandwidth indication comprises an indication of the capacity for data communication through each cell. One of the cells is then selected for packet-based communication in accordance with the determined bandwidth indications.

  • Publication number: 20080188183
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for a receiving station, such as the receive part of a mobile station, that has diversity antennas. The receiving station includes both legacy demodulators and a diversity demodulator. Calculations are made to determine signal indicia associated with the signal energy detected at the diversity antennas. Responsive to the signal indicia, selection is made as to whether to utilize demodulation data, demodulated pursuant to a diversity demodulation technique or pursuant to a legacy demodulation technique. As the characteristics of received signals change, reselection of the demodulation is correspondingly made, such as on a frame-by-frame basis of frame-formatted data.

  • Publication number: 20080032735
Abstract: Cell selection apparatus, and an associated methodology, for a radio communication system. Cell selection is made in a manner to distribute loading amongst cells of a radio communication system. Determinations are made of available cells, that is, cells whose base transceiver stations broadcast signals of characteristics at least as good as a selected threshold. Selection of a cell is made from amongst the available cells. The selection is made in a random manner to facilitate thereby distribution of communication loading.

  • Publication number: 20080025317
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for selecting a radio subsystem in a radio communication system. Selection is made in a manner that optimizes better the selection for communication of data pursuant to a data communication service. A network capacity analyzer includes a capacity indicia collector that collects metric information associated with communication system capacities. Network information is collected pertaining, e.g., to a backhaul network, a radio access network, and a core network of the radio communication system. The collected information is provided to an aggregate capacity determiner that determines the aggregate capacities of the communication system. Such values are provided to a mobile station. The values are used pursuant to reselection procedures to select a radio subsystem through which to communicate.

  • Publication number: 20070189161
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for selecting whether to authorize connection of a mobile station to communicate by way of a communication network. Radio frequency uncertainty, such as at coverage area boundaries, is managed to control better the selection. Signals broadcast by the communication system are monitored and signal performance metrics of the signals are identified. Average values of the performance metrics are identified, and rates of change of the performance metrics are calculated. When the average values are beyond a selected threshold and the rates of change are positive, authorization is granted to permit the connection of the mobile station to the communication network.

  • Publication number: 20070165583
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for use by a mobile communication device in switching operation for communications from a wireless wide area network (WWAN) to a wireless local area network (WLAN) are disclosed. While providing operation for communications in the WWAN, the mobile device continually maintains visited cell site history information in its memory. The visited cell site history information is indicative of one or more visited cell sites of the WWAN that served the mobile device over a moving time period of its operation. The mobile device continually monitors the visited cell site history information to identify whether it has been contained within a local geographic region over the moving time period. When the mobile device is identified to have been contained within the local geographic region, it is permitted to operate for communications with the WLAN. In response to such permission, the mobile device may enable its WLAN radio transceiver and select the WLAN for communications.
