  • Patent number: 6487181
Abstract: A communication device employs a method and apparatus for transmitting and receiving information in a time slot. When transmitting, the communication device generates user information symbols and positions the symbols in a first portion of the time slot. The first portion of the time slot occupies less time than the time slot. The communication device then transmits the user information symbols during the first portion of the time slot only. When receiving, a communication device decodes and then encodes a received time slot, presuming the received time slot is not a truncated time slot. The communication device determines an error metric for the encoded time slot and, based on the error metric, determines whether the encoded time slot is a truncated time slot. When the encoded time slot is a truncated time slot, the communication device processes the user information symbols in the received time slot.

  • Patent number: 5289504
Abstract: Multilevel angle modulated information is decoded through integral use of channel state information. In a Viterbi Algorithm Trellis Code Modulation decoder (213), channel state information indicating temporal reliability of received symbols is utilized, along with the received symbol information and the Trellis Coding rules themselves, to facilitate a most probable symbol determination. The channel state information may be received signal strength indication information. The latter can be additionally processed by, for example, time delay compensation (401), normalization (403), morphological erosion (404), linearization (406), and/or through static channel detection (408).

  • Patent number: 5134635
Abstract: A convolutional decoder which assigns bit metrics to at least one bit of a symbol in a multilevel system. This decoder uses soft-decision Viterbi decoding with channel state information of a convolutionally-encoded communication transmitted using multilevel modulation.

  • Patent number: 4979188
Abstract: According to the invention, an information signal, such as a information signal, is sampled, quantized and processed digitally through an information encoder. Digitally processed samples produced by the encoder are modulated onto a communication channel to create channel symbols having a magnitude of modulation proportional to a characteristic of a respective digitally processed sample. Both a radio frequency (RF) transmission embodiment, and a wireline embodiment are provided. In a final aspect of the present invention, encryption is provided to ensure communication privacy.
