  • Patent number: 7777930
Abstract: The invention relates to an electro-optical light control element and to electro-optical displays and display systems, e.g. television screens and computer monitors, which contain elements of this type. The inventive light control elements contain a mesogenic control medium (2) that exists in an optically isotropic phase when the light control elements are in operation. In addition to having a good contrast, a low dependency on viewing angle and very short switching times, the light control elements are particularly characterized by having relatively low drive voltages. The inventive electro-optical light control elements contain a solid dielectric layer (5) between the electrode structure (3, 4) and the mesogenic control layer. The invention also relates to the mesogenic control media, which are used in the electro-optical light control elements and which can exist in a blue phase.
