  • Patent number: 6547752
Abstract: A universal hand orthotic device is provided for treating contractures in a patient's left or right hand. The device comprises a bendable metal splint having a central, wrist support region with a hand support region projecting sidewardly from an upper end of the central region. Ears projecting to opposite sides of a lower end of the splint central region are bendable to fit the splint at least partially around a patient's left or right wrist according to intended use of the device. The splint is installed between relatively soft plastic foam pads. The padded splint is received into a padded mitt at least hand regions of which are formed of a smooth, non-irritating fabric. Straps attached to the mitt enable its releasable attachment to a patient's wrist and hand. A plurality of resilient cylinders of increasing diameters detachably attach to a mitt finger-grip region.

  • Publication number: 20020082538
Abstract: A universal hand orthotic device is provided for treating contractures in either of a patient's left hand or right hand. The universal hand orthotic device comprises a manually bendable splint element formed from a soft metal sheet, the splint element having an elongate central, wrist support region with an elongate hand support region projecting sidewardly from an upper end of said central region relative to a longitudinal axis of said central region. First and second ears projects to opposite sides of a lower end of the splint element central region, the ears being manually bendable relative to the central region to fit the splint element at least partially around either a patient's left wrist or a patient's right wrist according to the intended use of said device. The splint element is installed between first and second, relatively soft flat pads constructed from a closed cell plastic foam material to thereby form a padded splint assembly.

  • Patent number: 5957904
Abstract: A female urinary collection device includes a receptacle pouch for collecting urine. The receptacle pouch includes a first area for securing adhesive strip to each buttock of a user to create a relatively rigid engagement of the device with the body. In the upper zone, there is a stretch loop and foam belt for securing the pouch around the waist. Inside the receptacle pouch, there is a reservoir of adsorbent material with a wick which exits the receptacle pouch through a tubing connected to an orifice in the receptacle. The receptacle pouch fits around the labia majora of the user. In some cases there are two outlets from the receptacle. The orifices are spaced from each other such that when a patient is lying on either one of her sides with the receptacle in place the one orifice would be relatively above the other thereby facilitating drainage of urine from the receptacle when the patient is lying on either one of her sides.

  • Patent number: 5248292
Abstract: A static orthosis for application to a human patient at an elbow or a knee includes a unitary body composed of a composite material that includes an aluminum endo-skeleton molded into a closed cell polyethene foam matrix. The unitary body includes a proximal pad, a distal pad, and an elongated spine connecting the proximal pad and the distal pad. The unitary body is sufficiently stiff that it can be deformed only by deliberate application of strong shaping forces but is not deformed by the casual forces imposed by the patient during normal use of the orthosis. The unitary body is mostly covered by a unitary cover that includes pockets into which the proximal pad and the distal pad fit, and the unitary cover also includes laterally-extending straps for applying the orthosis to the patient. Because of its rigidity and its ability to be deliberately altered, the orthosis is ideally suited for accomplishing a progressive extension of the limb to which it is applied.
