  • Patent number: 9420520
Abstract: The invention concerns methods, a device and computer program products for simplifying handover back to a restricted local access point from an unrestricted global access point as well as to a device implementing a restricted local access point for provision in a wireless network and a wireless network. In the network a restricted local access point hands over a mobile station to an unrestricted global access point and provides data enabling the restricted local access point to be identified as a candidate access point. A device for simplifying handover back determines that the restricted local access point is a candidate for further handover based on this data and informs the mobile station about the restricted local access point via the unrestricted glob access point. Thereby hand over may be considered also to the restricted local access point in addition to other surrounding access points.

  • Publication number: 20140106771
Abstract: The invention concerns a method of determining output power in a first restricted local access point in a wireless network, a device implementing a restricted local access point, a wireless network as well as a computer program product for determining output power in a restricted local access point. A restricted local access point scans the network for determining broadcasting channels (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6) used by surrounding access points, selects a broadcasting channel (B4, f2) that receives the lowest disturbance by surrounding access points, varies the output power of this channel for obtaining a desired relation to the disturbance and determines if a main disturbing access point is another restricted local access point. If it is, a threshold is set for one of the quantities of the relation, which the quantity is not allowed to pass, the output power is varied for providing the desired relation without said quantity passing said threshold and otherwise another channel is selected.

  • Patent number: 7970400
Abstract: A telecommunications network comprises a base station node (28) which provides plural sets of radio transmission resources (52) for communicating with mobile stations (30) in a cell (40). At least one set (521) of radio transmission resources of the cell is a non-hopping set of radio transmission resources including a resource which may carry the BCCH, and other sets (521-52n) of radio transmission resources of the cell are hopping sets of radio transmission resources. A base station controller (26) node schedules calls comprising voice over internet protocol packet flows on the non-hopping sets of radio transmission resources in accordance with capacity of the non-hopping set of radio transmission resources. When the non-hopping set of radio transmission resources lacks capacity for a further call with a mobile station, the base station controller (26) node requests that the call be changed from a voice over internet protocol packet flow to a circuit switched connection.

  • Publication number: 20060268848
Abstract: A telecommunications network comprises a base transceiver station node (28) and a packet control unit (PCU) 25. The base transceiver station node (28) serves, e.g., for providing radio transmission resources to a cell (C) for radio frequency communications. The packet control unit (PCU) 25 serves for allocating the radio transmission resources to respective voice over internet protocol (VoIP) calls handled as packet switched connections. In addition, for at least one VoIP call, the packet control unit (PCU) 25 is arranged for determining whether the at least one VoIP call should be changed from one connection type to another connection type, e.g., from a packet switched connection to a circuit switched connection.

  • Publication number: 20060268813
Abstract: Radio channel resources are allocated in a radio communications system based on whether a requested data communication requested is associated with a symmetric service or an asymmetric service. If the data communication is associated with a symmetric service, a symmetric connection between the mobile radio station and the radio network is established for communicating data packets associated with the data communication. Radio channel resources are assigned to the symmetric connection for transporting the data packets between the mobile radio station and the radio network. The symmetric connection is assigned substantially the same amount of radio channel resources in an uplink direction as in a downlink direction. In one example, the symmetric data communication is a voice over IP (VoIP) communication. One example environment is a GPRS/EDGE type system where the radio channel resources are time slots and the symmetric connection includes an uplink temporary block flow (TBF) and a downlink TBF.

  • Publication number: 20060268837
Abstract: A voice-over-IP (VoIP) connection is established over a radio interface with a mobile radio station. A current radio condition for the VoIP connection is determined, and from that, a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) for a portion of the VoIP connection. A VoIP voice encoding mode for a portion of the VoIP connection is selected based on the determined modulation coding scheme. VoIP voice is then encoded into a number of VoIP encoded frames using the selected VoIP voice encoding mode which has an associated bit rate. An optimal number of VoIP encoded frames is included in a VoIP packet for transport over the VoIP connection given the selected voice encoding mode and the selected MCS. Other adjustments may be made to ensure robustness of the VoIP connection and/or to maximize capacity.

  • Publication number: 20060268838
Abstract: A radio access bearer authentication procedure prevents a service application running on a mobile station from obtaining a higher level of radio access bearer service than is authorized by the network operator. A secret identifier is determined both at the mobile station and at the radio network. When the mobile's service application requests a particular level of radio access bearer resources, the mobile sends its secret identifier to the radio network which compares the two. Such secret identifiers may be determined from a SIM associated with the mobile. If the secret identifiers match, the radio access network allocates the requested radio access bearer resources for the service application. One example service application is voice over IP (VoIP).

  • Patent number: 6560239
Abstract: A method and system enables a packet-switched data communication in a wireless communications system to be quickly and easily reestablished after interruption. The computer communications protocol that has been negotiated during the establishment of the packet-switched data communication may be saved upon interruption and later restored. In an exemplary embodiment, a wireless subscriber activates a call-waiting-type service along with an option to retain a packet-switched data communication. Thereafter, the subscriber may be engaged in a data communication on a packet data channel of the wireless communications system. Acceptance of a subsequent incoming, circuit-switched voice call causes the data packet session to be suspended, but the negotiated parameters of the computer communications protocol are saved. After the subscriber terminates the voice call, another data packet session is established with the saved parameters without needing to renegotiate the computer communications protocol parameters.

  • Publication number: 20020061756
Abstract: A serving GPRS support node in a packet-switched portion of a communication network is registered in a mobile switching center (MSC) node in a circuit-switched portion of the network as a “virtual” circuit-switched node, in particular a base station controller of the like, instead of as an SGSN. The virtual BSC has one virtual cell with a unique Location-Area identity that is included in the search area used by the MSC when the MSC tries to locate a remote terminal that fails to reply to a paging message. Paging messages for such a remote terminal exchanging packets in a packet-switched portion of a communication network are broadcast in a cell on a common (circuit-switched) control channel and may also be included in a packet data stream sent directly to the terminal. The result is the same as if the circuit-switched and packet-switched portions of the network have combined procedures for mobility management, even if they do not.

  • Patent number: 5903851
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing a call circuit connection between a mobile station and a remote application host is disclosed. Once a call circuit connection is initially established between a mobile station and remote application host to enable data to transfer therebetween, the call circuit connection is monitored for detection of an idle condition. Upon detection of the idle condition, identifying information for the call circuit connection is stored, and a first portion of the call circuit connection is disconnected while maintaining a second portion of the connection. Upon a request for reconnection of the call circuit connection, the first portion of the call circuit connection is reestablished with the second portion to enable continued data transfer.
