Publication number: 20090033039Abstract: An asymmetric bead formed in a gasket is provided. The gasket defines a plane. The bead includes a first half emboss portion positioned at a first angle to the plane of the gasket. A bead top portion is positioned parallel to the plane of the gasket and is connected to the first half emboss portion. A second half emboss portion is positioned at a second angle to the plane of the gasket and is connected to the bead top portion. The first angle is greater than the second angle so that the length of the first half emboss portion is shorter than the second half emboss portion and therefore, has a smaller surface area being acted on by a higher pressure fluid on the first half emboss portion so that the forces acting on the first and second half emboss portions are equalized.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 28, 2005Publication date: February 5, 2009Applicant: Freudenberg-NOK General PartnershipInventors: Scott M. Anderson, Yingjie Kong, Martin Novil

Publication number: 20070200301Abstract: A sealing gasket assembly includes one or more carriers each having an offset flexible stopper portion spaced laterally outwardly away from an offset inner sealing portion that is adjacent an opening or other area requiring sealing between mating members adapted to be clamped together. An optional shim can be disposed adjacent to, and aligned with, the carrier. A resilient sealing material is applied to at least portions of the carrier and/or the shim, such as by screen printing, for example. The gasket assembly can be used advantageously in sealing applications such as those for cylinder heads and blocks, intake or exhaust manifolds, piping or other fluid conveying devices, housings, enclosures, or other situations where relative movement can occur between the members to be sealed to each other.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 2, 2007Publication date: August 30, 2007Applicant: FREUDENBERG-NOK GENERAL PARTNERSHIPInventors: Martin Novil, Yingjie Kong, Scott Anderson, Ronald Wangerow

Patent number: 7128322Abstract: A cylinder head gasket is coated with an encapsulant that is mixed with a light color pigment to create a light colored encapsulant. A translucent topcoat is preferably coated over the encapsulant. The encapsulant is preferably an epoxy primer, the topcoat is preferably a silicone, and the pigment is preferably made from titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 2003Date of Patent: October 31, 2006Assignee: Freudenberg-NOK General PartnershipInventors: Martin Novil, Jerry Gerstile Smith

Patent number: 7121556Abstract: A gasket is provided having a body including at least one service aperture and an integrally formed sealing bead portion. In an embodiment, the sealing bead portion includes a first outwardly extending bead and a first concave channel opposite the first outwardly extending bead. The first concave channel is defined by a second outwardly extending bead and a third outwardly extending bead. In an alternative embodiment, the sealing bead portion includes an annular sealing member molded to the body, and the annular sealing member is opposite an outwardly projecting sealing bead. In a second alternative embodiment, the sealing bead portion includes an internal chamber filled with a pressurized gas. In a third alternative embodiment, the sealing bead portion defines a chamber filled a polymeric material.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 2004Date of Patent: October 17, 2006Assignee: Freudenberg-NOK General PartnershipInventors: David Michael Barth, Martin Novil, Ronald W. Wangerow

Publication number: 20050046120Abstract: A sealing gasket includes an offset flexible stopper portion spaced laterally outwardly away from an offset inner sealing portion that is adjacent an opening or other area requiring sealing between mating members adapted to be clamped together. Preferably the gasket includes a single layer carrier onto which a resilient sealing material is applied to at least portions of the carrier, such as by screen printing, for example. The gasket can be used advantageously in sealing applications such as those for cylinder heads and blocks, intake or exhaust manifolds, piping or other fluid conveying devices, housings, enclosures, or other situations where relative movement can occur between the members to be sealed to each other.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 28, 2003Publication date: March 3, 2005Inventors: Martin Novil, Yingjie Kong, Scott Anderson, Ronald Wangerow

Patent number: 5586769Abstract: A head gasket comprising a laminate, metallic core and fiber-elastomer facing layers on each major surface of the core and defining a plurality of combustion openings, oil and water holes and bolt holes. A thin shim is disposed on one of the facing layers. The shim has arcuate elements lying adjacent to each of a pair of adjacent combustion openings. U-shaped armors at each combustion opening have legs overlapping the edges of the facing layers and portions of the shim elements adjacent to the edges of the combustion openings, with the shim elements extending radially outwardly beyond the armor legs.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 1995Date of Patent: December 24, 1996Assignee: Fel-Pro IncorporatedInventors: Martin Novil, Michael O'Brien
