Abstract: A protective garment of a type preferably conforming to at least one NFPA standard and worn by firefighters and by emergency rescue workers has a body, which has two sleeve mouths, and has two sleeves. Each sleeve is attached to the body by being sewn thereto, along and around a margin of an associated one of the sleeve mouths, so as to extend in a forward direction when unstressed. The forward direction may be a forward and downward direction, a forward and upward direction, or a forward and lateral direction. The protective garment may be a protective coat, a protective jacket, a protective shirt, or a suit of protective coveralls.

Abstract: A pad, such as a knee, elbow, or shoulder pad, is wearable over an articulatable joint involving an arm of a wearer or a leg of a wearer and is constructed so as to define two flexing lines extending between an upper edge of the pad and a lower edge of the pad, which flexing lines define a central region of the pad and two lateral regions of the pad, so as to define a flexing line spaced from the central region and extending through each of the lateral regions, and so as to define plural flexing lines spaced from the upper and lower edges and from one another and extending across the central region, between the lateral regions. The pad comprises plural layers, which are sewn so as to define the flexing lines, and at least some of those layers are fabric layers.

Abstract: A liquid-tight, pull-over, protective garment, which is adapted to be worn by a wearer, under a helmet worn by the wearer, under gloves worn by the wearer, and over another garment or other garments worn by the wearer, is adapted to cover the head, upper torso, arms, and hands of the wearer even if the protective garment is worn without a helmet and without gloves. In one contemplated embodiment, substantially all of the protective garment, and particularly a portion of the protective garment that covers the eyes of the wearer when the protective garment is worn, is transparent. In an alternative embodiment, a portion of the protective garment, at least where the protective garment when worn covers the eyes of the wearer, comprises a transparent window.

Abstract: A wearable monitoring unit can provide physiological information indicative of a condition of an individual wearing the unit, or, can provide ambient condition alarm related information, from a displaced ambient condition sensor, to the individual to warn the individual as to the existence of the ambient condition. A plurality of physiological conditions associated with the individual can be monitored along with a plurality of different outputs from displaced ambient condition sensors which are in wireless communication with the monitoring unit. All such information can be automatically presented to the wearer, or, forwarded to a supervisory unit.

Abstract: A protective glove (10) is provided for use by a firefighter or other emergency worker. The glove (10) includes an outer shell (22), at least one liner (24, 28, 30) located inside of the outer shell (22), and a dead air space (34) located inside of the outer shell (22).

Abstract: A protective hood is provided for covering at least a portion of a wearer's head. The hood includes an upper head covering section, a posterior head covering section, a neck covering section and an anterior head covering section. The anterior head covering section includes a window through which a portion of the wearer's face is exposed. The window is adjustable from a first position to a second position, exposing different portions of the wearer's face.

Abstract: A drag harness is disposed within a protective garment, such as a protective coat, except that the drag harness has two gripping portions, each of which extends outwardly from the protective garment, through an associated one of two separate openings of the protective garment, and which are connected to each other, outside the protective garment. Being connected to each other outside the protective garment, the gripping portions cannot be inadvertently pulled in to the protective garment, through the garment openings.

Abstract: A protective garment conforming to NFPA standards is combined with a measuring scale, which is displayed along a portion of the protective garment, such a sleeve, body, or leg, so as to facilitate taking a measurement, while the protective garment is being worn by a person. In a preferred mode for carrying out this invention, the measuring scale facilitates taking a measurement, while the garment of the combination is being worn by each person in a series of persons, to facilitate tailoring a similar garment for each person in the series of persons. In an alternative mode for carrying out this invention, the measuring scale facilitates taking a measurement, while the garment of the combination is being worn by just one person, to facilitate tailoring the garment of the combination to fit such one person.

Abstract: A protective glove (10) is provided for use by a firefighter or other emergency worker. The glove (10) has a hand covering portion (16) with a plurality of fingers (18) extending therefrom. The protective glove (10) includes a palm face (12) to cover the palm side of the hand and fingers of a wearer, a back face (14) to cover the back side of the hands and fingers of a wearer, and at least one fourcette (22) connecting the palm face (12) to the back face (14) around a perimeter of at least one of the fingers (18) of the glove (10) to define a 3-D type construction for the at least one of the fingers (18). The palm face (12) is joined directly to the back face (14) around a perimeter of at least another one of the fingers (18) of the glove (10) to define a pancake-type construction for the at least another one of the fingers (18).

Abstract: A protective garment (10) is provided for use by a firefighter or other emergency worker in connection with a weight-bearing harness (24, 30) worn by the firefighter or other emergency worker over the exterior of the protective garment (10). The protective garment (10) includes an outer shell (40), a moisture barrier liner (42) within the outer shell (40). The protective garment (10) is constructed of first and second moisture barrier materials (50, 51), with the first moisture barrier material (50) having superior wear resistance in comparison to the second moisture barrier material (51). The first moisture barrier material (50) is utilized in areas requiring additional wear protection.

Abstract: A protective garment for a military or paramilitary firefighter or emergency worker has a shell of high visibility with trim that is reflective, fluorescent, or both, a shell of low visibility without such trim, and a moisture barrier between the shells. Being reversible, the protective garment is wearable with either shell facing outwardly and with the other shell facing inwardly. In terms of heat resistance, flame resistance, and tear strength, each shell conform to all applicable standards of NFPA 1971 for outer shells of protective clothing. In terms of thermal protection performance, the protective garment conforms to all applicable standards of NFPA 1971 for all layers of protective clothing. Desirably, the protective garment conforms to the standards of NFPA 1971, no matter which shell faces outwardly when the protective garment is worn, except that the shell of low visibility does not have trim that is reflective, fluorescent, or both.

Abstract: A protective garment for a fire fighter or emergency worker is provided. The protective garment includes an outer shell and a drag harness located at least substantially within the outer shell. The drag harness includes a wearer portion, a gripping portion and a flap operably coupled to the gripping portion. The flap is releasably secured to the outer shell in a stored state. The flap and the gripping portion remaining operably coupled to one another and extend away from the outer shell in a deployed state to drag a wearer.

Abstract: A self-contained breathing apparatus or a respirator can be equipped with a sensor of ambient airborne conditions. A display unit can be carried by a face mask for the apparatus or respirator. Responsive to output signals from the sensor, the display unit can present an air quality indicator, or a breathability indicator to a user of the apparatus or respirator.

Abstract: A protective garment for a firefighter or for an emergency rescue worker is equipped with a drag harness and with a litter, which, when not deployed, is stored within a pocket of the garment and wherein the drag harness and the litter, when deployed, facilitate carrying a wearer. A back-covering portion of the protective garment has the pocket, which is located where the back-covering portion covers a lower region of the back of a wearer. The drag harness has two arm loops and a drag grip, which is attached to the arm loops and which extends outwardly through apertures in an upper region of the back-covering portion. The litter has two, flexible, longitudinal members, each of which is attached to one of the arm loops of the drag harness, and multiple, flexible, transverse members, which extend between the longitudinal members, outside the pocket, when the litter is deployed.

Abstract: As combined with a protective garment having a generally tubular portion, such as a protective coat having a sleeve, or such as a pair of protective pants having a pants leg, which may be regarded as being generally tubular, and a drag harness, which is assembled to the generally tubular portion and which facilitates dragging a wear from a hazardous situation. The drag harness includes a loop, which is assembled to and within the generally tubular portion, and a grip, which extends through an aperture in the generally tubular portion. The loop and the grip may be made from a single length of strapping or, alternatively, the loop and the grip may be made from separate lengths of strapping. The loop may have a fixed length or, alternatively, the drag harness may have a running noose, by which the loop is adapted to tighten when the grip is pulled.

Abstract: A closure for use with a pocket for a protective garment is provided. The closure includes a margin, a closure body and an edge. The edge is thicker than the closure body so as to provide better tactile feedback for the wearer. The edge may also include an insert located within the edge.

Abstract: A self-contained breathing apparatus includes a tank of compressed air and an associated connector. A coaxial conduit extends from the connector to a face plate which might be used by a first responder. Air from the tank is coupled to the face plate via an internal conduit. Exhaled air from the face mask is carried away via an external conduit that surrounds the internal conduit, at least in part, and insulates the air being coupled to the face plate from ambient temperatures. The breathable air, flowing in the internal conduit also cools the exhaled air in the external conduit prior to that air flushing spaces between protective layers of the first responder's coat.

Abstract: A high visibility safety vest for use with an air/oxygen bottle such as used with a SCBA. The vest includes a torso covering portion of high visibility material. The torso covering portion includes a back panel with an air/oxygen bottle receiving cover of the high visibility material formed in the back panel to extend therefrom and cover an air/oxygen bottle of a SCBA worn by a wearer of the vest.

Abstract: A protective hood for use by a firefighter or other emergency worker. The hood includes a crown portion to cover the top of a wearer's head, the crown portion being made from a material having a primary stretch direction oriented to extend in a transverse (ear-to-ear) direction across the top of a wearer's head; and a lower portion that extends downward from the crown portion, the lower portion being made from a material having a primary stretch direction oriented to extend in a circumferential direction around a wearer's head.

Abstract: A protective glove for a firefighter or for an emergency worker has an outer shell, an intermediate liner providing a moisture barrier, and an inner liner providing a thermal barrier, the outer shall having an inspection port, which is openable and closeable and which when opened enables portions of the intermediate liner to be visually inspected through the inspection port, the outer shell having a flap, which is positionable between a position wherein the inspection port is closed by the flap and positions wherein the inspection port is opened, the protective glove having releasable fasteners, such as hook-and-loop fasteners, for releasably fastening the flap in the position wherein the inspection port is closed by the flap.
