    Abstract: At the time of starting to a kernel substitution, all processes executed on a first process are migrated to a second processor. Thereafter, a new kernel is loaded onto a main memory (substitution memory) set to be in a standby state in advance, and the first processor is rebooted based on the new kernel. Thereby, the new kernel can be applied to only the first processor. Thereafter, the process on the second processor operated based on a previous kernel is migrated to the first processor operated based on the new kernel. Thereafter, the second processor is rebooted based on the new kernel, and the main memory (substitution memory) is accessed, so that the first and second processors are operated based on the new kernel. As a result, a function of the new kernel can be applied to the multi-processor system. Therefore, the kernel can be substituted with a new one without stopping the operation of the system.

    Abstract: Unique data block identifiers are assigned to the entire data block group of plural external memory devices. The file management information stores, in a table format, the unique data block identifiers in connection with a file held in the data block group. When a file management process is executed in accordance with the operation type (access, addition, registration, deletion) of file management, the file management information is referred to. Furthermore, a data block group management process is called and the operation is performed. When a data block shift process is executed, the data block group management process is called and the contents of the data block are shifted between external memory device based on the file management information. When the file management process or the data block shift process is executed, data stored in the file management information is rewritten on an as-needed basis.

The vector computer further includes read/write controller 13 for storing white addresses of the memory at which results of operations being performed in stages of a pipeline are to be written, comparing the write addresses with a read address generated by arithmetic unit 12, and when at least one of the write addresses coincides with the read address, detecting that data designated by the read address is being operated in any stage of the pipeline, i.e., is not determined yet, thereby inhibiting reading of the data designated by the read address from memory 11.
