  • Patent number: 6586867
Abstract: A glass spacer for an electron-beam emitting display device is composed of non alkaline glass having almost the same linear expansion coefficient as that of soda-lime-silica glass. The glass includes SiO2 with 10 to 35 percent by mass, RO, in which “R” refers to an alkaline earth metal, with 20 to 60 percent by mass, B2O3 with 9 to 30 percent by mass and Al2O3 with 0 to 10 percent by mass, and which is substantially free of alkali. The linear expansion coefficient of the glass spacer is in a range from 76×10−7/° C. to 92×10−7/° C. The glass spacer may further include La2O3 with 0 to 30 percent by mass, ZnO with 0 to 8 percent by mass and TiO2 with 0 to 5 percent by mass.

  • Patent number: 6511843
Abstract: A glass capillary for DNA analysis is provided, which allows the DNA detection efficiency of a DNA analyzer that uses electrophoresis to be increased, and allows the DNA analyzer to have a simple structure. A glass capillary for DNA analysis has an internal hole, and each of the glass capillary and the internal hole has a rectangular cross section. Since the glass capillary and the internal hole each have a rectangular cross section, scattering of the laser beam at the surfaces of the glass capillary can be prevented and hence the transmittance of the laser beam can be increased. As a result, the detection efficiency of the electrophoretic DNA analyzer can be increased, and moreover the analyzer can be given a simple structure.

  • Publication number: 20020014092
Abstract: There are provided a method of manufacturing an optical glass element, for which flatness and smoothness of the surfaces of the optical glass element can be improved while securing the similarity of the cross-sectional shape of the optical glass element to that of the mother glass, and for which continuous production involving few steps can be carried out, and an optical glass element manufactured using the method. A mother glass is prepared, which has a cross-sectional shape substantially similar to a desired cross-sectional shape of the optical glass element, and the mother glass is drawn while heating to a predetermined temperature such that the mother glass has a viscosity of 105 to 109 poise.

  • Publication number: 20010046263
Abstract: A comparing/judging unit 125 of a video encoding apparatus compares, prior to encoding each image data, the predictive amount of codes accumulated in a receiver buffer of a decoding apparatus with a threshold that is set for a picture type of a picture to be obtained by encoding the image data. The comparing/judging unit 125 judges, when the predictive amount in the receiver buffer is below the threshold, that encoding the image data is to be skipped, and makes the DCT unit 113 cancel the encoding process. The comparing/judging unit 125 then outputs an all-skip picture in which all macroblocks except a first macroblock and a last macroblock in each slice layer are skipped macroblocks from a SKIP picture storage memory 126.

  • Publication number: 20010036339
Abstract: There are provided a method of manufacturing a glass part for connecting optical fibers, which allows insertion of optical fibers into the internal hole of the glass part smoothly, and glass parts for connecting optical fibers manufactured using the method. Predetermined parts of a glass tube having an internal hole are heated while pressure is applied into the internal hole, to expand the predetermined parts, thus forming tapered portions. As a result, a continuous curved surface can be achieved at the boundary between each tapered portion of each obtained glass part and the internal hole thereof, and the surface can be made smooth where the tapers are formed.

  • Patent number: 4785612
Abstract: Self-propelled walk-behind lawn mower having a rear discharge chute. The rear wheels of the lawn mower are driven by the engine through an axle which is fixed relative to the outer housing and which extends below the discharge chute so as to not interfere with the flow of grass clippings from the discharge chute. A transmission is provided for driving the rear wheels and is offset to one side of the discharge chute so as to be clear of the path of discharged grass. All four wheels of the mower are simultaneously adjustable and the driven rear wheels are adjustably by pivotal movement of a driving transmission that interconnects the wheels with the driven axle. In addition, a combing arrangement is provided on the outer housing for combing grass upwardly before it reaches the cutting blade.
