Publication number: 20120175243Abstract: To provide a method for manufacturing a perpendicular magnetic recording medium which has improved electromagnetic conversion characteristics, and thus making it possible to achieve the much higher recording density. Disclosed is a method for manufacturing a perpendicular magnetic recording medium to be used for recording information by a perpendicular magnetic recording system, the perpendicular magnetic recording medium including at least a soft magnetic layer, an underlayer, and a magnetic recording layer on a substrate. In the method, the underlayer is formed by sputtering deposition, including a low-gas-pressure deposited layer deposited at a low gas pressure during the deposition, and a high-gas-pressure deposited layer deposited at a high gas pressure during the deposition. The high-gas-pressure deposited layer is formed of a multilayer deposited by decreasing a deposition rate in a stepwise manner.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 22, 2011Publication date: July 12, 2012Applicant: WD MEDIA (SINGAPORE) PTE. LTD.Inventors: Motoi Fukuura, Takashi Koike, Shigeaki Furugoori, Masaki Uemura

Patent number: 8003237Abstract: A magnetic disk 10 for use in perpendicular magnetic recording, which includes an underlayer 18, a size-reduction promoting layer 20 (nonmagnetic granular layer) of a granular structure, and a magnetic recording layer 22 having a ferromagnetic layer 32 of a granular structure. The size-reduction promoting layer 20 has an inorganic oxide matrix and nonmagnetic metal crystal grains and is disposed between the underlayer 18 and the ferromagnetic layer 32, thereby reducing the size of magnetic crystal grains in the ferromagnetic layer 32.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 2006Date of Patent: August 23, 2011Assignee: WD Media, Inc.Inventors: Yoshiaki Sonobe, Teiichiro Umezawa, Kong Kim, Masaki Uemura

Patent number: 7169487Abstract: In a magnetic recording medium including a glass substrate (1) having a principal surface on which at least a magnetic layer (4) is formed, the magnetic recording medium has a coercive force of 2500 oersted or more in a circumferential direction thereof. The principal surface of the glass substrate is provided with a texture having a predetermined surface roughness so that the magnetic layer is given circumferential magnetic anisotropy. The magnetic recording medium further includes a magnetic anisotropy inducing layer (2) formed between the glass substrate and the magnetic layer so that the magnetic recording medium has an oriented ratio (OR) of 1.1 or more. The oriented ratio (OR) is defined as a ratio of a magnetic characteristic in circumferential direction to another magnetic characteristic in the radial direction.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 2002Date of Patent: January 30, 2007Assignees: Hoya Corporation, Hoya Magnetics Singapore Pte. Ltd.Inventors: Hisao Kawai, Teiichiro Umezawa, Hirotaka Tanaka, Masaki Uemura

Patent number: 7081308Abstract: In a magnetic recording medium including a substrate (1) having a principal surface on which first and second magnetic layers (5 and 7) and a spacer layer (6) are at least formed, each of the first and the second magnetic layers being of a ferromagnetic material, the spacer layer being formed between the first and the second magnetic layers for inducing antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between the first and the second magnetic layers, the principal surface of the substrate is provided with concentric textures to have a predetermined surface roughness so that the spacer layer has a uniform thickness. The first magnetic layer is for controlling the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 2004Date of Patent: July 25, 2006Assignees: Hoya Corporation, Hoya Magnetics Singapore Pte.
