    Abstract: When a piston unit and a valve unit employed in a recording head of an ink-jet recording apparatus were manufactured by a conventional method, comprising parts for these unit were separately formed and assembled, which required considerable man-hours for the assembly and measures to prevent contamination by foreign particles during the assembly. The present invention is carried out to solve these problems and provides units at less expensive cost. In order to attain above-mentioned objectives the units are formed out of mutually insoluble materials with other parts by an insert molding or a multi-color molding. By employing forming materials with different molding shrinkage rate, desired gas-tightness of the units are attained by keeping moving performances of the units almost intact. In addition a rubber or an elastomer is employed as a material for a part which requires a gas-tightness and flexibility.

    Abstract: A cover for an alignment sensor that provides sensor output so as to align printer output from multiple print heads in an ink jet printer. The cover is preferably mounted for hinged movement between an open position and a closed position so that a sensing face of the alignment sensor is protected from ink mist during printing operations. A chassis of the printer may be provided with projections that engage with the cover when the carriage is moved to extreme rightward and leftward positions on the printer, so that the cover may be hinged to the open and closed position simply through movement of the printer carriage. Preferably, the cover is formed of an electrically conductive material with a tab that grounds the cover to a metallic portion of the printer chassis. Forming the cover from an electrically conductive material provides the additional benefit of protecting the alignment sensor from static discharge.

    Abstract: A printer includes a housing defining a media feed portion and a media eject port, the housing being adapted to house a print engine for printing onto recording media. Included in the printer is a base slideably receivable in the housing at a position laterally distanced from the media eject port, the base having at least a pair of recesses extending in a sliding direction of the base. A pair of flaps are included in the printer, each of which has at least one width portion corresponding to the lateral distance between the base and the eject port. Each flap is hinged into a corresponding recess of the base and is biased in an upward direction via a spring which provides for angular motion of the flap relative to the base. Upon sliding action of the base out of the housing, the flaps are biased upward out of the recesses to a height corresponding to the position of the media eject port.

Bearings attached to the carriage and mounted on a guide shaft are displaceable with respect to the carriage, and the bores of the bearings are eccentric with respect to the guide shaft. This enables the carriage to be displaced in a horizontal plane in accordance with the thickness of recording paper, and to consequently incline the ejection-outlet-array line of the recording head on the carriage. Further, the carriage is pivoted about one of the bearings in a plane including the bearings in accordance with the thickness of the paper.

    Abstract: An ink ribbon cassette and a recording apparatus adapted to detachably attach the ink ribbon cassette thereto. An electrode for dissipating electrical charges on the ink ribbon surface is provided either in the ink ribbon cassette or on a carrier of the recording apparatus. The electrode can comprise a resilient conductive member, such as a ground plate having an end portion that is bent into a V-shape. In addition, the electrode may be provided with sharp projections adapted to make scratches on the ink ribbon surface. The electrode is adapted to be brought into contact with the ink ribbon surface either before or after the ink ribbon is used for thermal recording. The electrode forms a path through which charge on the ribbon can be dissipated even if the surface layer of the ribbon is an insulator.
