    Abstract: A starter which optimally maintains the characteristics of a spring which presses a brush and reduces its axial direction length. A compressed coil spring is arranged around an outer circumference of a plunger of a magnet switch and the length of the spring can be set as long as the radial direction length of the magnet switch. The spring effectively uses the space around the outer circumference of the magnet switch, so the axial direction length of the spring need not be added to the axial direction length of the starter.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a starter which is simplified in the structure of its pinion rotation regulating mechanism and is down-sized in its entire structure. A pinion regulating member abuts with a pinion and moves the pinion towards a ring gear by the rotation of an output shaft, while preventing rotation of the pinion. When the pinion abuts with the ring gear, the pinion regulating member bends and gradually rotates the pinion to mesh with the ring gear. By this arrangement and operation, generation of abrasion powder is reduced with reduced number of component parts.

    Abstract: In order to absorb the impact force produced when a pinion meshes a ring gear, a magnet switch is disposed apart from a pinion. The distance between a plunger of the magnet switch and a pinion rotation regulating member is lengthened so that a link mechanism having an elastic member such as a cord-shaped member or a spring is lengthened. As a result, the impact force produced when the pinion meshes the ring gear can be prevented from being directly transmitted to the plunger. Consequently, there is no vibration of the plunger and a movable contact can be reliably prevented from moving away from a fixed contact.

    Abstract: A magnet switch which can prevent formation of dew between a movable contact and a fixed contact under the low temperature condition. A cover is made of an insulating material having a base, and the fixed contact is supported in the cover. The fixed contact is connected with the tip portion of an external power feed wire covered with a coating sheath or outer layer of insulation. The tip is embedded in the cover together with the coating sheath or outer layer of insulation, thus eliminating an external power feed terminal with a large surface area that is exposed to the atmosphere. The fixed contact is not cooled even under low temperature condition, and dew condensation between the fixed contact and movable contact can be securely prevented.

    Abstract: A starter having a highly reliable overrunning clutch which has grooves on both a clutch member inner and a clutch outer member. Rollers are sandwiched from the front and rear torque conveyance direction by the roller contact surface of each groove, so a large stress such as with the roller-type overrunning clutch using the wedge-effect is not applied on each contact surface and roller contact surface. This reduces the inertia of the clutch, and suppresses the impact force generated when a pinion engages an engine ring gear.

The upper movable contact is directly installed and integrated with a brush, so the heat generated by the bush is efficiently dissipated through the brush, upper movable contact, fixed contact and terminal bolt out the battery cable connected to the terminal bolt.

    Abstract: A magnet switch for starter which controls electric power supply to a motor in two steps is disclosed. The magnet switch has a fixed contact connected to a battery, an exication coil and a plunger. On the plunger, a first movable contact, a second movable contact and an elastic resistor member are coupled. When the plunger is attracted by the coil, the secont movable contact first contacts the fixed contact so that the motor rotates at a low speed with electric power from the battery supplied through the elastic resistor member. When the plunger is further attracted, the first movable contact contacts the fixed contact so that the motor rotates at a higher speed with the electric power without passing through the eleastic resistor member.

The seal member has a clearance which is placed to correspond to a notched ventilation hole so that the yoke can be opened in the direction of the starter bottom or the ground.

    Abstract: A starter for starting an engine with a ring gear includes a starter motor having a plurality of field poles disposed around an inner periphery thereof, an output shaft for transmitting rotation of the starter motor, a pinion mounted on the output shaft for meshing with the ring gear, and a magnet switch including a fixed contact and a plunger with a movable contact, which abuts the fixed contact. By moving the plunger and causing the movable contact, to abut the fixed contact electrical current is passed to the starter motor. The magnet switch is disposed in an end of the starter opposite an end where the pinion is disposed, with the plunger being disposed orthogonal to a longitudinal axis of the starter motor. The starter disclosed herein reduces the axial and diametral lengths and overall volume of the starter.

    Abstract: The provision of an electric rotating machine which can reduce the mechanical and thermal loads applied thereto. Coil arms and coil trunks are provided in roughly parallel orientation to the end faces of an armature core only through insulating rings and insulating spacers. Metal brush is disposed on coil arms, whereby the overall length of the armature can be remarkably shortened. In addition, a commutator, conventionally necessary, can be eliminated, whereby the length of the production process for the armature can be reduced. Moreover, in an arrangement where projections of the upper coil arm are fit in holes of the insulating spacer, as the displacement of the upper coil arm towards the outer periphery is regulated, the length of the axial protrusions of the upper coil arm from the end face of the armature core can be minimized.

    Abstract: An electric rotating machine with a lightweight and low cost yoke which has sufficient durability to be used under high vibration environments. A tubular yoke for electric rotating machine has a pair of lid portions laid on both axial ends of a tubular portion of a yoke. Through bolts for press-fitting the pair of lid portions from both sides tightens and fixes the pair of lid portions to the yoke. Concave portions extending from the outer circumference to the inner circumference are formed axially on the tubular portion. The center where the tightening force of the through bolts is applied is set between the hypothetical extension outer diameter and inner diameter of the tubular portion at the concave portion so that the tubular portion and the lid portions are tightened and fixed.

The pinion gear contacts the drive shaft through a sliding portion. The structure of the starter prevents water, dust, dirt and other contaminants from leaking into the housing via a window in the housing.
