    Abstract: A starter/battery charger, which is coupled to an internal-combustion engine, operates as a starting motor for starting the engine and also operates as a charging generator for charging a battery after the engine has been started. Control unit controls the rotation speed of the engine by performing a driving control and a braking control on the starter/battery charger. The control unit carries out a judgement that a self-ignition state has been established in the engine depends on one of the rotation speed of the engine and a variation rate of the rotation speed has exceeded a prescribed value. The control unit switchs from the driving control to the braking control upon the judgement, thereby preventing the overshoot in the rotation speed of the engine.

    Abstract: A rotary current-collecting device includes a rotary slip ring and brushes coming into sliding contact with the outer peripheral surface of the slip ring. The brush-holding ring has an inner surface to which three brush-holding springs are fixed by screws. Each of the brushes is fixed to the tip end of the brush-holding spring and is pushed against the outer surface of the slip ring under the resilient restoration force of the brush-holding spring. When the slip ring revolves, the brushes come into sliding contact with the outer peripheral surface of the slip ring. The brush is made of a metal-graphite compound consisting of 70 weight percent copper and 30 weight percent graphite. The slip ring is entirely made of glassy carbon, so that the brush abrasion can be reduced.

The composite monochromator has a first and a second elliptic monochromators joined with each other side by side. Each of the elliptic monochromators has a first focal point at which an X-ray focal spot on a target of the X-ray tube is disposed. Each of the elliptic monochromators has a synthetic multilayered thin film whose d-spacing varies continuously along an elliptic-arc. The shortest distance between the X-ray focal spot and the composite monochromator is set to 40 to 100 mm. Under the shortest distance condition, the effective focal spot size on the target is set to 40 to 100 micrometers to obtain the maximum X-ray intensity on a sample to be analyzed.

The emitter is comprised of plural emitter regions made of sintered lanthanum hexaboride. The hot cathode can be produced as described below. The heating element with a thickness of 1 mm is formed, at its thermoelectron-emitting side, with four recesses each of which is 2.6 mm in length, 0.5 mm in width and 0.3 mm in depth. The recesses are filled with lanthanum hexaboride powder, which is then sintered to complete four emitter regions.
