  • Publication number: 20010034237
Abstract: Systems and processes for interactive services are provided. A user-interactive application may be implemented to provide a specific service, such as a wagering service, to a user through a mobile wireless communications device. The application may be implemented partly on the mobile wireless communications device and partly in other equipment used to provide the service. The current location of the user may be determined based on determining where the user is operating the mobile wireless communications device. The application may respond differently to user selections based on where the user is currently located. For wagering systems, wagering may be prevented when the user is operating the mobile wireless communications device from a locality where wagering is not legal.

  • Publication number: 20010034268
Abstract: An interactive wagering application is provided that assists users in finding races on which the users desire to wager on and that assists users in placing wagers on the desired races. The application may provide a search feature that allows the user to search for races based on user inputted search criteria such as favorite jockey, trainer, runner, or any suitable combination thereof. The application may also provide a next hour feature that searches for upcoming races that start within a certain time period. The application may also display an interactive overlay that contains information to assist users in creating a wager. The interactive overlay may be displayed when a user highlights or points to information. The interactive overlay may contain, for example, an estimated current payout for a specific wager amount, the total amount of the wager, the weather conditions at a racetrack, or any other suitable information.

  • Publication number: 20010031656
Abstract: The present invention is systems and methods for interactive wagering. Preferred embodiments of these systems and methods incorporate a wagering data hub which controls the flow of data relating to wagers, wagering events, and wagering account and facilitates the use of a variety of user interfaces such as graphical user interfaces and interactive voice response interfaces. For example, a user of the present invention may use a television set-top box, a computer, a telephone, and/or any other suitable device. To communicate with the wagering data hub, television set-top boxes preferably use a two-way cable system, computers preferably use a computer network, and telephones preferably use a telephone network, although each may use any suitable mechanism or combination of mechanisms to communicate with wagering data hub.

  • Patent number: 5924017
Abstract: In a paging system, a central paging station determines a preferred amount of time, or "sleep value," that a paging device is to be inactive during a paging cycle based upon the volume of page messages that paging device historically receives during given time periods. After determining a preferred sleep value, the central paging station creates and transmits a wake-up interval page message. The paging device receives the wake-up interval page message and changes its wake-up interval to correspond to the one contained in the received page message.

  • Patent number: 5915210
Abstract: A two-way communication system for communication betweeen a system network and a mobile unit. The system network includes a plurality of base transmitters and base receivers include in the network. The base transmitters are divided into zonal assignments and broadcast in simulcast using multi-carrier modulation techniques. The system network controls the base transmitters to broadcast in suimulcast during both systemwide and zone boundaries to maximize information throughout. The preferred mobile unit inlcudes a noise detector circuit to prevent unwanted transmissions. The system network further provides an adaptive registration feature for mobile units which controls the registration operation by the mobile units to maximize information throughout.

  • Patent number: 5809428
Abstract: A network operations center transmits a data message to a wireless mobile unit and waits for a data acknowledgment message. If no acknowledgment is received within a specified time, the network operations center sends a probe message to attempt to locate the mobile unit and waits for a probe acknowledgment message. If still no acknowledgment, the network operations center marks the data message as undelivered and stores it for future delivery. If a mobile unit receives a probe message while its transmitter is powered off, it displays an indication to the subscriber that there is a message waiting to be delivered. The subscriber can then dial into the network operations center to retrieve the message. Or, when the transmitter of the mobile unit is powered back on, the mobile unit sends a registration message to the network operations center; and upon receiving the registration message, the network operations center automatically re-transmits the undelivered data message to the mobile unit.

  • Patent number: 5754946
Abstract: A two-way communication system for communication between a system network and a mobile unit. The system network includes a plurality of base transmitters and base receivers included in the network. The base transmitters are divided into zonal assignments and broadcast in simulcast using multi-carrier modulation techniques. The system network controls the base transmitters to broadcast in simulcast during both systemwide and zonal time intervals. The system network dynamically alters zone boundaries to maximize information throughput. The system also uses a mobile unit which receives messages from the network and transmits messages to the network. The mobile unit includes a switch that allows a user to request the network to retransmit a received message that contains errors.

  • Patent number: 5396228
Abstract: A system and method for encoding and decoding page messages includes an encoder for encoding and classifying each word of the page message. Words found in one of one or more word dictionaries are encoded into corresponding compressed codes. A header code identifying either the dictionary or the classification of the word is associated with each word. The encoded message is transmitted to a page receiver where each word is decoded based upon the header code associated therewith. If the header code indicates that the word is a compressed code stored in a word dictionary, the compressed code is used to retrieve the word from the dictionary. If the header code indicates that the word is not stored in a word dictionary, the words are decoded differently, depending upon their classification.
