  • Patent number: 4925634
Abstract: A monolithic catalyst converter for use with a car, motorcycle or the like for purifying exhaust gas emanating therefrom. A cylindrical casing is made up of longitudinally divided cylindrical casing halves and stores a catalyst carrier which is wrapped in a retainer member. Flanges extend on each of the casing halves in the lengthwise direction of the casing. Predetermined magnitudes of load are applied in predetermined directions to the cylindrical casing to mate the flanges to each other and, in the mating position, the flanges are rigidly connected to each other.

  • Patent number: 4851298
Abstract: A tube of a muffler for an internal combustion engine includes at least two generally rectangular sheets which are joined together at one end by crimping and wound in a tubular configuration to constitute two consecutive layers. In the tubular configuration, the other end of each of the two sheets overlaps the sheet itself and welded to the latter straddling a coupling portion where the two sheets are joined. While one of the sheets which constitutes an inner layer of the tube is made of a material which is resistive to corrosion due to chemical reactions with combustion gas and others flowing through the tube, the other which constitutes an outer wall of the same is made of a material which withstands adverse ambient conditions such as briny air and high humidity.

  • Patent number: 4719679
Abstract: A muffler for use on an internal combustion engine includes an enclosure generally cylindrical and having end plates for closing the internal volume of the enclosure, at least one partition plate for dividing the internal volume of the enclosure into at least two chambers, an inlet tube, supported by one of said end plates and at least one partition plate, for conducting combustion gases supplied from the engine to one of the chambers; an outlet tube, supported by the other of the end plates and at least one partition plate, for blowing out the gases from remaining one of the chambers; and a connecting tube supported by said at least one partition plate for interconnecting the volume of adjacent ones of the chambers. At least two of the inlet, outlet and connecting tubes are integrally made of a single sheet of metal shaped to form a combination tube including the at least two tubes. A method of manufacturing such a combination tube is also provided.

  • Patent number: 4656830
Abstract: An exhaust manifold for an internal combustion engine wherein exhaust ducts connected to respective engine cylinders are formed of discrete pipe members. A united section has an upstream divergent portion connected to the exhaust ducts and a downstream convergent portion to exhaust pipes. An internal space is defined in the downstream convergent portion and located intermediately between adjacent internal passages in the downstream convergent portion to communicate them with each other. An opening is formed in the peripheral wall of the downstream convergent portion at a location positionally corresponding to the internal space. A flange member has a boss formed thereon and being larger in size than the opening and disposed in face-to-face contact with an outer surface of the peripheral wall of the downstream convergent portion. The boss has a through bore formed therein and aligned with the opening, through which an exhaust constituent concentration sensor is to be inserted.

  • Patent number: 4589517
Abstract: A muffler for an internal combustion engine for effectively damping noise over a wide frequency range, from low frequency noise to high frequency noise. An absorber packed type muffler adapted to absorb noise by a sound absorbing material is inserted in and fixed to a housing which has a bore or bores thereinside, thereby forming one of a pipe inserted type muffler, a resonance type muffler and an interference type muffler to attain combined characteristics of both the types of mufflers.

  • Patent number: 4580656
Abstract: A muffler connected to an exhaust system of an automotive or like internal combustion engine for damping noise, which accompanies engine exhaust, using a sound absorbing member. An intertwined meshwork in a tubular configuration serves as means for covering and firmly retaining the sound absorbing member, which is wound around a perforated pipe, on the outer periphery of the perforated pipe. The tubular meshwork is produced by intertwining in a desired density strings each of which is made up of a number of strands.

  • Patent number: 4574913
Abstract: A muffler for use with various instruments and furnished with a spark arresting function. An inlet pipe for receiving exhaust gases from the instrument and an outlet pipe for discharging the exhaust gases to the atmosphere are arranged in an expansion chamber of a housing with their one end open to the latter. The expansion chamber is divided into two compartments by a partition having a wire net therewith. An intermediate pipe for providing fluid communication between the two compartments is mounted on the partition. The air flow area of the wire net and the cross-sectional area of the intermediate pipe are selected such that the quantity of the gases flowing through the wire net is larger than that of the gases flowing through the intermediate pipe. The outlet pipe is formed with an exhaust gas inlet through its side wall portion which is larger in area than the open one end and covered with a wire net.

  • Patent number: 4547942
Abstract: A method of rigidly connecting a plate and a tube such as those of a muffler associated with an internal combustion engine. The plate is formed with an eyelet by burring or like technique and, then, the tube is inserted into the eyelet as far as a predetermined position. A stop is placed to backup the plate at a flat surface of the latter where a flange produced by the eyelet is absent. This is followed by driving a die to compress the flange in such a manner as to reduce the diameter of the eyelet, thereby plastically deforming the flange. Part of the flange proportional to the decrease in diameter is caused to thrust into the periphery of the tube.
