Abstract: Embodiments of the invention relates to bandwidth requirements within a packet data network. A method and system for analysing traffic is described herein. The method may utilises an estimation of a concave hull function of the arrived traffic within the buffer. The use of such a concave hull representation may allows for more efficient data processing and for a direct measurement of desired service rates for differing predetermined control parameters.

Abstract: A method of monitoring events in network traffic is described herein, in accordance with various embodiments. The method may provide for the reduction in the number of network traffic samples that need to be analysed in order to determine performance criteria for the traffic in the network. By selecting specific samples as representative of the requirements of all the traffic, it may be possible to more efficiently and quickly provide an analysis of the activity of the network.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention may relate to methods of traffic measurement on a network. In some embodiments, the methods may include obtaining a measure of shaped traffic before shaping on the basis of passive traffic observations of the shaped traffic. In one embodiment, the method may include analysing a traffic aggregate of packets in a network comprising: separating the traffic aggregate into a series of individual co-temporal sub-aggregates; and performing a measurement using the individual sub-aggregates of the series to obtain a statistical measure for the traffic aggregate.
