    Abstract: The present invention provides a battery-powered smoke/fire alarm unit which comprises a housing accommodating: at least a first battery; a smoke/fire detector linked to an audible alarm powered by the first battery; a telecommunications unit; and a switch responsive to triggering of the alarm to then connect the telecommunications unit to the first battery or to a second battery in the housing to thence power the telecommunications unit to send a warning message.
