A change of a particular attribute throughout the entire document can thus be carried out simply by changing the conversion style elements in which this attribute appears.

Abstract: A computer-based method for improved automatic formatting of a document provides easier accepting and rejecting of formatting actions made by the automatic formatting method. In particular, the user inputs a document, or any part of a document, into a computer system. For each document portion that the user wants formatted in a particular way, the user delimits that portion of the document with a unique format identification feature that corresponds to a format rule. When the user initiates the computer-based automatic formatting method, the method identifies each document portion in the document delimited by at least one format identification feature, and applies to that document portion a format rule corresponding to the at least one format identification feature. The method displays an indicium of the format rule together with the document portion thereby displaying the format rule and the document portion together. The method then receives a user input accepting or rejecting the displayed format rule.

The check manager program receives at least one text element from a text manipulation program, and sends the at least one text element to a text element checking program to identify whether the at least one text element conforms to predetermined linguistic rules. Each of the check manager program, the text manipulation program, and the text element checking program are separate from the others.

Abstract: Methods and systems consistent with the present invention include an improved spreadsheet program which is user-friendly, and allows the user to view all previous spreadsheet documents at one time in a tree scenario. Specifically, the user enters data into a spreadsheet of the spreadsheet program, saves each data set entered into the spreadsheet as a scenario using a name or other identifier, and then the user can view all the scenarios created at one time on screen as a tree structure. The user can then compare the different scenarios the user has created, and move between the different scenarios easily.

A computer readable document containing content data and formatting data is converted into an XML-document whereby the content data and formatting data are separated and are arranged as separate elements in the XML-document. The computer readable document contain first formatting data which are directly assigned to a formatted object and second formatting data contained in a separate formatting template. On the XML-document, the first formatting data are then arranged in a formatting element and the second formatting data in a parent formatting element referring back to the child formatting element.
