    Abstract: Process and system for the operation of a fireplace or the like in which combustion products including pollutant gases and entrained particulate materials are treated to substantially reduce pollutant levels. The combustion products are passed through a confined flue passageway, such as found in a chimney stack, which extends upwardly to the exterior of the dwelling house or other structure. The flow of combustion products is interrupted in a manner to cause the products to follow a tortuous path in which entrained particulates in the combustion products are separated so that they collect in a suitable disposal zone. The combustion products then pass into an afterburner section comprising a plurality of heating elements. The temperature of the combustion products is sensed below the afterburner section and above bank of heating elements.

    Abstract: A combined cycle waste-to-energy plant is utilized to thermally convert municipal and industrial solid wastes into essentially complete products of combustion and use the combustion heat to produce steam and/or electrical power. The plant includes a building enclosure having a waste receiving area, a waste fuel separation and processing area, an incinerator area and a heat recovery and power generation area. Processed waste fuel is delivered to a series of incinerators by an automated conveyor and hopper system, and the waste fuel is burned in the incinerators by hot exhaust gas delivered thereto from one or more combustion turbines located outside the building and drivingly connected to electrical generators. Inlet air to the turbines is drawn from with the building to maintain its interior at a negative pressure, thereby preventing waste odors and pathogens from escaping from the building.

The waste disposal system includes a building enclosure having an interior storage area for accumulating combustible refuse, and an incinerator for thermally oxidizing the refuse. In a preferred embodiment, the incinerator includes a combustion chamber which is maintained at a reduced pressure level relative to the pressure of the surrounding atmosphere. This subatmospheric pressure arrangement produces a positive flow of air into the chamber as it is loaded thereby permitting loading during combustion virtually without risk of injury to personnel or damage to surrounding combustible material.

In another preferred embodiment, the incinerator includes a primary combustion chamber which is maintained in an excess air condition as combustion occurs, and a secondary combustion chamber into which an auxiliary source of fuel such as natural gas is injected.
