  • Patent number: 9853725
Abstract: A compensation function mitigates a substantial portion of the chromatic dispersion imparted to a communications signal by an optical communications system. A digital input signal is digitally processed using the compensation function to generate a predistorted signal. An amplitude and a phase of an optical signal are modulated using a pair of orthogonal signal components to generate a predistorted optical signal for transmission. In one implementation, the pair of orthogonal signal components are components of the predistorted signal. In another implementation, the predistorted signal is processed using a non-linear compensator to generate a further distorted signal and the pair of orthogonal signal components are components of the further distorted signal. In that implementation, the non-linear compensator is configured to substantially compensate for nonlinearities in one or both of an optical modulator of a transmitter of the system and an optical-to-electrical converter of a receiver of the system.

  • Publication number: 20170310390
Abstract: Using pump-probe measurements on multi-span optical links may result in the determination of one or more of the following: 1) wavelength-dependent power profile and gain evolution along the optical link; 2) wavelength-dependent dispersion map; and 3) location of regions of high polarization-dependent loss (PDL) and polarization-mode dispersion (PMD). Such measurements may be a useful diagnostic for maintenance and upgrade activities on deployed cables as well as for commissioning new cables.

  • Patent number: 9768875
Abstract: A method of transmitting a data signal using an optical transmitter of an optical communications system. The optical transmitter is configured to modulate an optical carrier in successive signalling intervals to generate an optical signal. A modulation scheme is provided which comprises a multi-dimensional symbol constellation. The modulation scheme is designed such that an average degree of polarization of a modulated optical signal output from the optical transmitter has a first value when averaged across a first signalling interval, and has a second value when averaged across more than one and fewer than 100 signalling intervals. The second value is less than 10 percent of the first value. During run-time, an encoder of the optical transmitter encoding a data signal to be transmitted as symbols of the constellation, and a modulator of the optical transmitter modulating available dimensions of the optical carrier in accordance with the symbols.

  • Patent number: 9749058
Abstract: Techniques for transmitting a data signal through an optical communications system. An encoder is configured to encode the data signal to generate symbols to be modulated onto an optical carrier. Each symbol encodes multiple bits of data and includes a first portion selected from a first constellation and a second portion selected from a second constellation. The first and second constellations have respective different average amplitudes. Each of the first and second constellations have a cardinality of at least two and the cardinality of the first constellation is greater than the cardinality of the second constellation. A modulator is configured to modulate a first frame of the optical signal using the first portion and modulate a second frame of the optical signal using the second portion. A selection of one frame of the optical signal to be used as the first frame encodes at least 1 bit of data.

  • Patent number: 8787754
Abstract: A method of estimating nonlinear transmission impairments of an Optical Channel (OCh) trail in an optical communications network. A per-span nonlinear field variance is calculated for each span of the trail. The per-span nonlinear field variance represents nonlinearly induced noise due to the transmission impairments of that span. The nonlinearly induced noise being imparted to a signal transmitted through the trail and detected by the receiver. A respective covariance between the nonlinear fields contributed by each span pair of the OCh trail is computed. The covariance represents the correlation of the nonlinearly induced noise imparted to the signal within the first span of a span pair with the nonlinearly induced noise imparted to the signal within the second span of the pair. A covariance matrix is populated using the computed per-span variance values and covariance values. A total nonlinear field variance is computed by summing over the covariance matrix elements.

  • Patent number: 8705982
Abstract: A digital filter processes an input signal to be conveyed through an optical communications system. The processing generates a predistorted signal using a compensation function that mitigates impairments of the optical communications system. The input signal has a sample period of T, while the predistorted signal has a sample period of T/2. The digital filter has a first branch including a respective first T-spaced filter for processing the input signal using the compensation function to generate a corresponding first output signal comprising nT/2 samples with n odd. A second branch includes a respective second T-spaced filter for processing the input signal with a delay of T relative to the first branch using the compensation function to generate a corresponding second output signal comprising nT/2 samples with n even. A combiner operates to combine the first and second output signals to generate the predistorted signal having a sample period of T/2.

  • Patent number: 8249467
Abstract: A method of testing a dual-polarization optical transmitter comprising a pair of polarization transmitters for respectively generating first and second polarization signals, and a polarization combiner for generating an optical signal composed of the first and second polarization signals with respective orthogonal polarization vectors. Each of the polarization transmitters is controlled to transmit respective polarization optical signals having predetermined characteristics. An output of the dual-polarization optical transmitter is tapped to obtain a first tap signal representative of the first polarization signal, and a second tap signal representative of the second polarization signal. A relative angle between respective polarization vectors of the tap signals is controlled, and the first and second tap signals combined to generate a combined light. A power level of the combined light is detected, and processed to obtain information about the performance of the dual polarization transmitter.

  • Patent number: 8139954
Abstract: A digital filter is provided for processing an electrical input signal to be conveyed through an optical communications system. The processing generates a predistorted electrical signal using a compensation function that substantially mitigates for intra-channel non-linearity imparted to the communications signal by the optical communications system. The digital filter has a memory having a limited size storing a reduced data set used for approximating an original, unreduced data set used to implement the compensation function. The reduced data set is used for the digital filter to apply the compensation function to mitigate the intra-channel non-linearity over longer transmission distances of the optical communications system than would be possible without the use of the reduced data set.
