  • Publication number: 20190120009
Abstract: A tool for launching wiper plugs into a casing string in a gas or oil well during cementing operations employs a collet-like mechanism carrying radially-movable jaws arranged to retain a plug in a fluid flow path when the tool is in a closed position, and to release the plug into the fluid flow path when the tool is in an open position. Selection of the desired operational position of the plug launcher (i.e., open or closed) is effected by actuation of an axially-movable sliding sleeve. Alternative means for actuating the sliding sleeve include rotary actuation about the tool's longitudinal axis, rotary actuation about a radial axis generally normal to the longitudinal axis, rotary actuation about a generally tangent axis, and pneumatic or hydraulic actuation. The tool may be adapted to carry multiple wiper plugs for sequential launching into a casing string.

  • Publication number: 20180340372
Abstract: A torque transfer control tool has a rotary-stroking piston that is axially movable within a fluid chamber in response to rotation of mandrel having an upper end co-rotatably coupled to a first torsional drive system component and a lower end coaxially disposed and rotatable within the bore of a cylindrical housing. A lower end of the housing is co-rotatably coupled to a second torsional drive system component. Mandrel rotation in a first rotational direction moves the piston downward to pressurize a fluid in a lower fluid chamber below the piston. Fluid flow control means associated with the piston allows fluid flow out of the lower fluid chamber to prevent the fluid pressure therein from exceeding a first pre-set pressure, thus limiting the magnitude of the torque transferred to the second torsional drive system component in the first rotational direction via the tool housing.

  • Patent number: 9616559
Abstract: A shoulder ring, for installation in a threaded pipe coupling between the installed pin ends of two pipes being connected by the coupling, has opposing end faces and a central opening, and may be lobate or circular in shape. The shoulder ring provides enhanced axial retention within the coupling by incorporating a thread element which engages the internal threads of the coupling to prevent or deter displacement of the ring from the coupling. Alternatively, enhanced axial retention may be provided by way of an interference or interlocking fit that is plastically induced during the ring installation process. The shoulder ring may be of lobate or circular configuration, with the axial retention of lobate embodiments being further enhanced by forces acting radially outward against the coupling due to elastic deformation of the ring during installation. Also disclosed are tools for installing the shoulder rings in a threaded coupling.

  • Patent number: 9243715
Abstract: A fluid seal assembly consists of a seal element of compliant material that is retainingly carried by a seal carrier. The seal carrier includes one or more elements of relatively rigid material defining a sealing face with a seal-receiving groove interrupting the sealing face. The seal-receiving groove has groove-defining walls each of which has a proximal end at the sealing face and a distal end. The groove-defining walls serve as seal contact surfaces. The seal contact surfaces are configured such that the seal-receiving groove narrows toward its distal end. The seal-receiving groove has a depth and a breadth suitable for accepting the seal element, with the seal element projecting past the sealing face when compressed to be in contact with the seal contact surfaces.

  • Patent number: 9217310
Abstract: A cementing adaptor includes a cylindrical carrier carrying a casing seal, a middle interval and a lower end separated by an annular rib, and a cylindrical swivel element disposed around and coaxially rotatable relative to the middle interval. A cylindrical connector has an upper end rotatably disposed around the carrier's lower end and non-rotatably connected to the swivel element, plus a lower end connectable to an inner tubular string. With the carrier's upper end connected to a casing running tool (CRT), this assembly can be disposed within a casing string with the casing seal engaging the casing and preventing fluid flow into the casing annulus below the seal when cement is pumped down the inner string, such that the cement is urged into the wellbore annulus. The swivel connection limits torque transfer that might otherwise overload the CRT or its connection to the cementing adaptor.

  • Patent number: 9206660
Abstract: A fluid management tool for introducing fluids into a casing string incorporates a mud saver valve configured to open and allow fluid flow in response to fluid flow pressure reaching a predetermined opening pressure, and will automatically close when fluid flow pressure is reduced to or below a predetermined closure pressure, thereby preventing fluid spillage when the tool is withdrawn from the casing. The mud saver valve includes a mud saver spool having a slotted spool cage and being axially movable within a longitudinal bore in the main body of the tool, between an upper or open position in which fluid can flow out of the spool cage and into a discharge bore at the lower end of the main body, and a lower or closed position in which the lower end is seated against the exit bore to prevent flow therethrough. A check valve may be incorporated into the lower end of the mud saver spool.

  • Patent number: 8684851
Abstract: An axially-floating sub tool for axial load compensation in conjunction with a top drive comprises cylindrical upper and lower members, with the upper member being coaxially disposed within a cylindrical housing. The upper member has an upper section slidably disposed within an opening in the upper end of the housing, plus a middle section that slidably and sealingly engages the housing bore. The lower-member bore has a splined upper interval, and a coaxial stinger extending upward from an annular shoulder medially located in the lower-member bore. The lower member is connected to the lower end of the housing with the stinger slidingly and sealingly disposed within the upper-member bore, and with the lower-member splines slidingly engaging the upper-member splines, thus defining upper, middle, and lower annular chambers, with the middle and lower chambers in fluid communication, and with a regulator/check valve regulating pressure in the middle and lower chambers.

  • Patent number: 8196661
Abstract: A method for distributing injection fluid in a horizontal well bore in fluid communication with hydrocarbon bearing formation begins by determining flow resistance characteristics of the formation along at least a portion of the length of the horizontal well bore. An injection tubing string having a sidewall defining a tubing bore is injected into the horizontal well bore. The tubing string is provided with ports having a selected distribution and geometry. The annulus geometry is selectively controlled along the length of the tubing string through at least one of axial distribution of eccentricity and flow area of the annulus, so as to provide selected flow restriction characteristics along the annulus, such that when injection fluid is pumped into the tubing, a resulting flow resistance network is formed by the tubing bore, the ports, the annulus and the formation, resulting in a desired distribution of the fluid into the formation.

  • Patent number: 8042626
Abstract: A gripping tool includes a body assembly and gripping assembly with a grip surface adapted to move from a retracted position to an engaged position to radially engage a work piece in response to relative axial displacement. A linkage is provided to act between the body assembly and the gripping assembly which, upon relative rotation in at least one direction, of the body relative to the grip surface results in relative axial displacement of the grip surface to activate the gripping elements.
