  • Publication number: 20130112023
Abstract: An adjustment assembly is provided, including a rack and a stepped gear. The rack has an array of rack teeth. The rack is moveable in a generally linear direction as an amount of force is exerted on the rack in the linear direction. The stepped gear includes an inner step and an outer step. One of the inner step and the outer step has a set of teeth. The set of teeth are meshed with the array of rack teeth. A center axis is oriented at about a center of the outer step. An axis of rotation is offset from the center axis of the stepped gear, and is configured to create a variable gear ratio between the set of teeth of the inner step or the outer step of the stepped gear and the array of rack teeth as the rack is moved in a linear direction.

  • Patent number: 8430428
Abstract: The instant invention includes a mounting capsule for a steering column assembly of a vehicle. The mounting capsule has a first capsule portion and a second capsule portion coupled together during normal operation. The first capsule portion includes a first arm and a second arm each having a first taper and a second taper. The second capsule portion includes a first groove and a second groove tapered in a complimentary configuration to the first and second arm for receiving the first and second arm. Frictional forces between the first and second capsule portions aid in coupling the first and second capsule portions and effectively reduce lateral and vertical movement in a steering column assembly during operation. Upon an impact event exerting a predetermined impact force the first and second capsule portions disengage allowing the steering column assembly to collapse.

  • Publication number: 20120125139
Abstract: A telescope lock mechanism for a steering column includes a plurality of column teeth operably connected to the steering column and an adjustment lever operably connected to the steering column to allow user adjustment of a position of the steering column. A locking bolt extends from the adjustment lever, and a cam is located at the locking bolt and rotatable thereon. The cam includes one or more tab features interactive with the locking bolt such that rotation of the locking bolt engages the tab features with the locking bolt to drive rotation of the cam between a locked and unlocked position. The tab further includes a plurality of cam teeth meshable with the plurality of column teeth when the cam is in a locked position. A spring is operably connected to the cam to maintain the cam position in the locked and/or unlocked position when the cam is rotated thereto.

  • Patent number: 7798037
Abstract: A steering column assembly includes a column jacket coupled to a mounting bracket, with the column jacket pivotably movable about a pivot axis relative to the mounting bracket. A wedge arm is pivotably mounted to one of the column jacket and the mounting bracket and wedges against the other of the column jacket and the mounting bracket. The wedge arm prohibits the pivotable movement of the column jacket relative to the mounting bracket in response to an impact event. The wedge arm includes an arcuate shape having a variable radial distance between a pivot attachment point and a contact edge. The variable radial distance permits the wedge arm to fit between components of the column jacket and the mounting bracket when the column jacket is positioned in different positions relative to the mounting bracket.

  • Patent number: 6802536
Abstract: An energy absorbing device for a collapsible steering column of a vehicle is able to compensate for the severity of a crash and the weight of the driver to better manage the absorption of energy in a crash event. A housing has at least one fixed abutment surface, and at least one adjuster disposed in the housing for selective lateral slidable movement. At least one anvil is disposed adjacent an initial abutment surface of the adjuster in spaced relation to the fixed abutment surface of the housing in a first position of the anvil associated with high energy absorption. A plastically deformable strap is supported between the anvil and the housing. The adjuster slides out of the path of the anvil in a crash event in response to input of a control signal allowing the anvil to slide into contact with the fixed abutment surface of the housing to define a second position of the anvil associated with lower energy absorption.

  • Patent number: 6799486
Abstract: An interactive energy absorbing system including a steering column housing that is moveable along a collapse stroke corresponding to a force of impact by an operator. The interactive energy absorbing system includes an energy absorbing component that exerts a resistant force for resisting the movement of the steering column housing along its collapse stroke. The energy absorbing component includes a deformable strap that engages a stationary reaction member and a moveable reaction member. The stationary and moveable reaction members have an adjustable total active surface area for engaging the deformable strap and generating the resistance force. The moveable reaction member moves to adjust the total active surface area due to mechanical translation corresponding to the force of impact by the operator.

  • Patent number: 6749222
Abstract: An energy absorbing device for a collapsible steering column has a plurality of plastically deformable straps each with one end connected to the steering column and an opposite end bent around an anvil connected to stationary vehicle support structure. When the steering column collapses, the straps unwind from the anvils, thereby resisting steering column collapse and absorbing energy. One or more of the straps may be cut in two by a knife at the time of the collision, thereby removing it from the energy absorbing system. In another form of the invention, an energy absorbing strap extends around a piston which has two or more different size anvils. The piston is axially movable in a cylinder to positions surrounding one or another of the anvils. The strap is drawn over the anvil it surrounds when the steering column collapses, thereby resisting collapse of the steering column and absorbing a certain amount of energy depending on the size of the anvil.

  • Patent number: 6450532
Abstract: An energy absorber for a steering column includes a pair of plastic guides each of which is molded flat and closes at an integral living hinge around a corresponding one of a pair of serpentine flat metal straps so that the straps are captured in the guides between pairs of convex anvils on the guides. Each guide snaps into a guide slot in a mounting bracket on the steering column mast jacket. An inboard end of each flat metal strap is clamped to a vehicle body so that during a collapse stroke of the mast jacket, relative linear translation between the mounting bracket and the serpentine flat metal straps causes each of the straps to be thrust against and pulled across corresponding ones of the convex anvils. Plastic deformation of the flat metal straps at the convex anvils resist linear translation of the mast jacket. The dimensional accuracy of the molded plastic guides contributes to consistently predictable performance of the energy absorber.
