  • Patent number: 6600475
Abstract: The position of a target lying on a plane is indicated by inputting a pointing direction which is computationally projected onto a plane. If the target is known to lie on a contour, the position is specified unambiguously. Alternatively, the position of a target can be specified by inputting its axial coordinates in successive steps. In another alternative approach, the image containing the target is translated and/or rotated and the target indicated again. The two direction projections are then used to determine the position of the target in 2-space. The direction indications may be input by a camera or other method, such as one or more radio transmitters.

  • Publication number: 20030066071
Abstract: A program commercial based recommendation system employing a program commercial detection module, a facial estimation module, and a program recommendation module for implementing method for developing a viewing history of a viewer is disclosed. The program commercial detection module detects commercials within a transmission signal. In response to a detection of a program commercial, the facial estimation module generates a facial estimation of a viewer to thereby determine if the viewer is watching or not watching the program commercial. In response to a generation of the facial estimation, the program recommendation module stores the program commercial within a viewing history database. The stored commercial either has a positive rating when the facial estimation indicates the viewer is watching the program commercial or a negative rating when the facial estimation indicates the viewer is not watching the program commercial.

  • Publication number: 20030058339
Abstract: A system and apparatus are disclosed for modeling patterns of behavior of humans or other animate objects and detecting a violation of a repetitive pattern of behavior. The behavior of one or more persons is observed over time and features of the behavior are recorded in a multi-dimensional space. Over time, the multi-dimensional data provides an indication of patterns of human behavior. Activities that are repetitive in terms of time, location and activity, such as sleeping and eating, would appear as a Gaussian distribution or cluster in the multi-dimensional data. Probability distribution functions can be analyzed using known Gaussian or clustering techniques to identify repetitive patterns of behavior and characteristics thereof, such as a mean and variance. Deviations from repetitive patterns of behavior can be detected and an alarm can be triggered, if appropriate.

  • Publication number: 20030058111
Abstract: A method for monitoring a person of interest in a scene, the method comprising: capturing image data of the scene; detecting and tracking the person of interest in the image data; analyzing features of the person of interest; and detecting at least one of an event and behavior associated with the detected person of interest based on the features; and informing a third party of the at least one detected events and behavior.

  • Publication number: 20030058237
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for generating and maintaining multi-layered background models for use in background-foreground segmentation. The multi-layered background model captures various states of the background. Each additional layer in the background model is associated with a background object that has been moved. As a background object is moved, the corresponding pixel information can be transferred from one portion of an image to another corresponding to the new location of the background object. Each layer can be separately applied to a classifier to obtain an identification of the corresponding object.

  • Publication number: 20020178440
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for automatically selecting an alternate item based on user behavior. The disclosed television programming recommender monitors user behavior and automatically selects an alternate program when the viewer does not sufficiently like the current program selection. Detected predefined negative behavior includes, for example, (i) auditory commands, (ii) gestural commands, (iii) facial expressions, or (iv) other predefined behavior suggesting that the viewer dislikes the program. A flexible mechanism is provided for providing an alternate program selection.

  • Publication number: 20020167512
Abstract: A monocular input image is transformed to give it an enhanced three dimensional appearance by creating at least two output images. Foreground and background objects are segmented in the input image and transformed differently from each other, so that the foreground objects appear to stand out from the background. Given a sequence of input images, the foreground objects will appear to move differently from the background objects in the output images.

  • Publication number: 20020158984
Abstract: A stereo camera system including: a stereo imaging system such as two or more cameras or a camera and a set of angled mirrors, for outputting at least one stereo image; a recognition system for locating an object of interest in the field of view of the stereo imaging system and at least one of a distance of the object of interest from the stereo imaging system and the size of the object of interest; and an adjustor for automatically changing at least one system parameter which affects the spatial resolution of the object of interest based on at least one of the located distance of the object of interest from the stereo imaging system and the size of the object of interest.

  • Publication number: 20020162101
Abstract: Entertainment recommendations are made to a user of receivers responsive to broadcast signals. The receivers include an automotive vehicle radio receiver, a residential television receiver, a residential radio receiver, a residential or automotive CD player, and a receiver of Internet content, that is, a personal computer having a modem connection to the Internet. A storage device associated with at least two of the receivers stores compiled information about the user's program type preferences for the associated receivers. A signal combiner associated with at least one of the receivers combines the user's program type preferences for the receivers. A display coupled with the signal combiner makes the recommendations in response to the combined user's program type preferences for the receivers.

  • Publication number: 20020142722
Abstract: A recommendation system is disclosed that generates recommendations for one or more items based on user preferences and one or more environmental factors. The user's preferences are learned under various environmental conditions using an environmental data collection system. The observed environmental conditions may include, for example, location, characteristics of the location, weather or characteristics of the user's motion, such as a rate of movement. For each positive and negative behavioral example, a number of attributes of the selected item are classified in the user profile together with the prevailing environmental conditions. When recommending an item, the disclosed recommender retrieves the user preferences and evaluates the current environmental conditions. A recommendation score can be generated for each available item based on the user's demonstrated preferences under similar environmental conditions, such as in the same or a similar geographic area or under similar weather conditions.

  • Publication number: 20020140870
Abstract: An entertainment receiver is tuned in response to at least one signal indicative of preferred program content type for a user of the receiver. In response to received and detected program content type, program content type of plural program sources received by the receiver is determined. The program content type of the plural received program sources is compared with the stored signal indicative of preferred program content type for a user of the receiver. The receiver is activated so a received program source with the preferred program content type is presented to the user.

  • Publication number: 20020085097
Abstract: A system comprising at least one light source in a movable hand-held device, at least one light detector that detects light from said light source, and a control unit that receives data from the at least one light detector.
