Patent number: 8317250Abstract: A slide-out or retractable room for a mobile living quarters, such as a recreational vehicle, is provided with actuating assemblies mounted on opposite side walls of the slide-out room and the adjacent wall of the main living area. The actuating assemblies include a pair of parallel gear racks mounted on the side wall, which are engaged by pinions rotated by torque shafts mounted on the main living quarters. Each torque shaft is rotated by a separate motor. A roller engages a bearing surface on the lower portion of the gear racks. Accordingly, the slide-out room is extended and retracted by rotating the torque shafts to cause the gear racks and the attached slide-out room to extend and retract. The weight of the slide-out room is supported by the rollers, thereby supporting the slide-out room off of the floor of the main living quarters as it extends and retracts. A synchronizing control operates the motors.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 2011Date of Patent: November 27, 2012Assignee: Lippert Components Manufacturing, Inc.Inventors: Michael A. Schwindaman, Thomas J. Rogers, Michael W. Howard

Publication number: 20120150394Abstract: A system for extending and retracting a folding trailer. The trailer has a movable top extending from a base, and a plurality of extendible supports mounted on the base and connected to the top. A drive including an electric motor extends and retracts the extendible supports in unison to extend and retract the top. A controller is provided for the drive, the controller having a motor load monitor having both an ultimate load detector and a calculated load detector. In extending and retracting the top, the load of the electric motor is regularly monitored, and is first compared with an ultimate load threshold. The motor is stopped if the ultimate load threshold is met or exceeded. The monitored load is also compared with a stall load threshold, and the motor remains in operation until the stall load threshold is met or exceeded.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 14, 2010Publication date: June 14, 2012Applicant: Lippert Components Manufacturing, Inc.Inventor: Michael A. Publication number: 20110024706Abstract: A leveling jack for a vehicle, such as a recreational vehicle, includes a leveling piston and cylinder, a bi-directional, reversible pump, and a reservoir within a common sealed housing that does not require exterior fluid connections. The piston is extended from the housing to contact the ground and effect leveling by operating the pump in one direction, and is retracted into the cylinder by operating the pump in the other direction. Accordingly, the leveling jack is a self-contained unit, and does not require a central hydraulic unit and the necessary hoses between the jack and the central hydraulic unit as needed in the prior art.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 6, 2010Publication date: February 3, 2011Inventors: Michael A. Patent number: 7438015Abstract: A powered bimini top is raised and lowered via a remote control. A power actuator operating the top includes a bi-directional reversible pump turned in one direction to lower the top to a fully retracted position and turned in the other direction to raise the top via hydraulic actuators. The top may alternatively be raised and lowered by a spring or a screw actuator. A rigid link is provided on either the watercraft or one of the main struts of the top. The pump, spring or screw actuator causes the main strut to be held against the rigid link (or the rigid link against the watercraft) with sufficient force to prevent substantial relative movement during transport. Secondary struts are biased toward corresponding main struts by elongated elastic cords. A pressure-responsive switch is provided on one of the struts to reverse direction of the top if the strut encounters an obstruction.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 2007Date of Patent: October 21, 2008Inventor: Michael A. Schwindaman

Patent number: 7389737Abstract: A folding top assembly for watercraft of other vehicles includes a pair of struts pivotally mounted on actuator housings on opposite sides of the watercraft. The struts support a canvas covering and are moved by the actuators from a folded position in which the canvas covering and the struts are folded at the rear of the boat to an intermediate radar position in which the struts and canvas top are still folded against one another but are deployed in a raised position. One of the struts is maintained in the intermediate position when the top is moved into the fully deployed position, while the other strut is pivoted relative to the one strut. The actuators include a housing defining a bore therewithin, a piston or shuttle slidable in the bore, and a driving mechanism drivingly connecting the piston of each actuator with the struts so that movement of the piston in the bore pivots said struts relative to the piston.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 2005Date of Patent: June 24, 2008Inventor: Michael A. Schwindaman

Patent number: 7370597Abstract: A retractable top assembly for a vehicle, commonly referred to as a bimini top, includes a covering mounted on a pair of struts which are movable relative to one another to move the covering between a deployed position covering at least a portion of the vehicle and a retracted position. In the retracted position, the covering is wound upon a spindle rotatably mounted within a housing mounted on one of the struts. The housing has a slot through which the covering extends, so that the covering is attached to the other strut. A torsion spring within the housing biases the spindle in a direction winding the covering onto the spindle and thereby maintaining tautness of the covering as it unwinds from the spindle and is moved into the deployed position.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 2007Date of Patent: May 13, 2008Inventor: Michael A. Schwindaman
