  • Publication number: 20020191015
Abstract: A method and apparatus for managing a history for a browser in a data processing system. A history is recorded for a browser. The history may be presented to the user in a fashion similar to a video or slide show presentation in which Web pages in the history are sequentially presented in the order of visitation. The presentation of the history may be manipulated through a set of controls, such as a play button, a reverse button, a fast forward button, and a stop button. Potions of the history may be deleted or selectively exported for analysis or later use.

  • Publication number: 20020191020
Abstract: A method and apparatus for removing information in a data processing system. A selection of information for removal is received from a history generated by a browser, wherein the selection is received prior to a browser session. In response to a termination of the browser session, the information is automatically removed from the history using the selection without requiring a user input.

  • Patent number: 6433794
Abstract: A method in a data processing system for selecting a Java virtual machine for use with a browser. A user is prompted for an input, wherein input identifies a virtual machine to be used with the browser. A profile is altered for the browser to include an identification of the virtual machine identified by the input. The profile is used to select a virtual machine for use with the browser.

  • Patent number: 6393416
Abstract: Complex languages such as bidirectional or double byte character set (e.g., Unicode) languages are supported in tier-0 devices despite the limited storage resources common for such devices. A phrase dictionary is built within a host data processing system which is capable of communicating with the tier-0 device and which supports complex language input. Commonly used text strings are added to the phrase dictionary utilizing any characters. The contents of the phrase dictionary are then transferred, along with sparse font information containing only the glyphs necessary for characters within the phrase dictionary, to the tier-0 device. Since font information for only a subset of all possible characters is stored in the tier-0 device, a much smaller amount of storage resources are consumed. On the tier-0 device, the phrase dictionary is invoked by a user control such as a pop-up, and the desired phrase may then be selected for entry into a data entry field.

  • Patent number: 6310608
Abstract: A system and method for grouping together multiple keys on a keyboard to form compound keys is presented. An exemplary configuration of compound keys involves grouping function keys “F1” through “F4” together to form one key, grouping function keys “F5” through “F8” to form a second key, and grouping function keys “F9” through “F12” to form a third key. In such an embodiment, actuating any of the keys “F1” through “F4” results in the same input to the operating system or application program. A compound key may be assigned to a response such as “yes”, “enter”, or “cancel”. In another embodiment, a group of keys could be assigned to a particular alphanumeric character. The alphanumeric keys could in this way be grouped into a reduced number of larger alphanumeric compound keys. A separate group of keys (e.g.

  • Patent number: 6215490
Abstract: A method of managing a plurality of windows organized and displayed on the graphical user interface of a computer. At any given time, one of the plurality of windows has a focus on the graphical user interface and a remainder of the windows are at least partly obscured behind the window having the focus. The method begins by displaying a graphical control device on the GUI, The graphical control device preferably has a plurality of identifiers each of which is associated with a given one of the plurality of windows. Thus, the graphical control device may be a slider, with each of the identifiers being a “notch”. As the graphical pointer is moved in a predetermined manner relative to the notches, respective windows are selectively positioned at the focus position on the GUI. Thus, the user may easily locate any desired window by traversing the graphical pointer across the slider notches. As each notch is traversed, the window associated therewith is brought into the focus position.

  • Patent number: 6112215
Abstract: A system for the ease of use in making repetitively or frequently required data entries into interactive display interface pages or screens which includes a database of repetitively or frequently used data entries which may be ported to any displayable interface page or screen even though the interface page is provided from a source independent of and remote from the database holding the repetitive data entries. The system provides means for displaying on each of the plurality of interface pages or screens, a menu of items each representative of one of said plurality of repetitive data entries, and means for selecting on each displayed interface screen, at least one of said items to thereby make a data entry in a data entry field on said screen. The system is customizable to each particular user by permitting the user to modify the data entries in the portable database to satisfy the user's needs. In addition to Internet document systems, the invention is applicable to electronic mail systems.

  • Patent number: 5841420
Abstract: In a data processing system having a display and an operating system, information is displayed within a first window utilizing information display software. Thereafter, the process detects a second window displayed within the display at a location that obscures a portion of the information displayed in the first window. Utilizing the operating system, the process notifies the information display software that the portion of the information within the first window is obscured by the second window. In response to receiving this information, the information display software displays, in the first window, the portion of the information that had been obscured by the second window, wherein the information in the first window previously obscured by the second window may be viewed in the first window by the data processing system user. Information displayed in the first window may be textual or graphical.
