  • Patent number: 11060040
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for block operation during lubricant and/or fuels production from deasphalted oil. During “block” operation, a deasphalted oil and/or the hydroprocessed effluent from an initial processing stage can be split into a plurality of fractions. The fractions can correspond, for example, to feed fractions suitable for forming a light neutral fraction, a heavy neutral fraction, and a bright stock fraction, or the plurality of fractions can correspond to any other convenient split into separate fractions. The plurality of separate fractions can then be processed separately in the process train (or in the sweet portion of the process train) for forming fuels and/or lubricant base stocks. This can allow for formation of unexpected base stock compositions.

  • Patent number: 10947464
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for integration of use deasphalted resid as a feed for fuels and/or lubricant base stock production with use of the corresponding deasphalter rock for gasification to generate hydrogen and/or fuel for the fuels and/or lubricant production process. The integration can include using hydrogen generated during gasification as a fuel to provide heat for solvent processing and/or using the hydrogen for hydroprocessing of deasphalted oil.

  • Patent number: 10550341
Abstract: Methods are provided for producing lubricant base stocks from deasphalted oils formed by sequential deasphalting. The deasphalted oil can be exposed a first deasphalting process using a first solvent that can provide a lower severity of deasphalting and a second deasphalting process using a second solvent that can provide a higher severity of deasphalting. This can result in formation of at least a deasphalted oil and a resin fraction. The resin fraction can represent a fraction that traditionally would have been included as part of a deasphalter rock fraction.

  • Publication number: 20180355264
Abstract: A process of producing Group III base oils, along with a naphtha product and diesel product, from whole waxy crude oil is provided. The inventive process omits the typical vacuum distillation stage and separations to form the typical cuts off of the vacuum tower. By selecting a waxy crude oil suitable for processing without separations, the crude oil may be hydroprocessed, dearomatized, dewaxed, and hydrofinished to produce a Group III base oil. Additionally, the dewaxing catalyst will isomerize the naphtha range molecules to increase the octane value to a suitable level for blending into gasoline and the diesel range molecules to reduce the diesel cloud point.

  • Publication number: 20180187105
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for performing solvent extraction on heavy neutral base stocks. The aromatic extraction can reduce aromatics content while have a reduced or minimized impact on lubricant properties. This can allow, for example, for correction of color and/or haze for heavy neutral base stocks, such as heavy neutral base stocks formed from a deasphalted oil.

  • Patent number: 9902913
Abstract: Methods are provided for producing Group II/III lubricant base oil products where at least a portion of the feedstock for forming the lubricant base oil product is a solvent extract fraction from a Group I lubricant production facility. This can increase the overall volume of feedstock available for production of Group II/III lubricant base oils by using a lower value stream (Group I solvent extract) as a portion of the feedstock. The solvent extract fraction can be added to a full range lubricant feedstock or to a portion of a lubricant feedstock, such as adding an extract fraction to a higher viscosity portion (such as a heavy neutral portion) of a feedstock for lubricant production, while a lower viscosity portion (such as a light neutral portion) is processed without addition of an extract fraction.

  • Patent number: 9719034
Abstract: Methods are provided for processing a gas oil boiling range feedstock, such as a vacuum gas oil, in a single reaction stage and/or without performing intermediate separations. The methods are suitable for forming lubricants and distillate fuels while reducing or minimizing the production of lower boiling products such as naphtha and light ends. The methods can provide desirable yields of distillate fuels and lubricant base oils without requiring separate catalyst beds or stages for dewaxing and hydrocracking. The methods are based in part on use of a dewaxing catalyst that is tolerant of sour processing environments while still providing desirable levels of activity for both feed conversion and feed isomerization.
