  • Publication number: 20130260426
Abstract: The present invention relates to non-naturally occurring polypeptides useful for preparing armodafinil, polynucleotides encoding the polypeptides, and methods of using the polypeptides. The non-naturally occurring polypeptides of the present invention are effective in carrying out biocatalytic conversion of the (i) 2-(benzhydrylsulfinyl)acetamide to (?)-2-[(R)-(diphenyl-methyl)sulfinyl]acetamide (armodafinil), or (ii) benzhydryl-thioacetic acid to (R)-2-(benzhydrylsulfinyl)acetic acid, which is a pivotal intermediate in the synthesis of armodafinil, in enantiomeric excess.

  • Patent number: 8454662
Abstract: The present application is directed to tethers and methods of use for reducing and/or eliminating spinal deformities. Tethers may be attached with anchors to extend between two or more vertebral members. The tethers may apply a force to the vertebral members to treat the spinal deformity. The tethers may include a strength limit to prevent an excessive amount of force from being applied that could damage the vertebral members. In one embodiment, the tether may release such as by breaking, expanding, or separating from the anchors if the force exceeds a strength limit.

  • Publication number: 20120131094
Abstract: A method for indirectly controlling a website using a user communication device is disclosed. A unique machine-readable code is displayed on a display device, the unique machine-readable code being specific to the display device displaying contents from a website through a server. The unique machine-readable code is readable by a user communication device, the user communication device in turn being able to communicate with the server through a communication path not involving an input device associated with the display device. Commands to control content displayed through the server are received from the user communication device. The commands include the identity of the specific display device by the displayed unique machine readable code. The content displayed on the specific display device is then changed accordingly.

  • Publication number: 20120130889
Abstract: An electronic financial transaction arrangement using a payer device to read a machine-readable pay code in which transaction details for a specific transaction may be encoded by a pay code provider is disclosed. The machine-readable pay code may be distributed to the payer device through acoustic stimuli, or as a result of voice or human based gesture actions. A user of the payer device may also participate in the financial transaction through the indirect control of a display by reading a unique machine-readable code unique to the display. Additional transaction details for the specific transaction may be received in the payer device through near field communication, or accessed at a later time when there is established connectivity to a mobile network.

  • Patent number: 7527337
Abstract: A chair with a chair back pivotally attached to a seat. The chair back can be moved from a collapsed position located directly adjacent the seat to an upright position. When in the upright position, a spring biased latch assembly attached to chair seat allows engagement with the chair back and can be adjusted to several, adjustable positions selected by the user. In addition to providing a range of adjustment, this latch system also provides structural integrity to the design of the pivoting chair invention.

  • Publication number: 20050036611
Abstract: A system and method configured to provide secure Personal Identification Number (PIN) based authentication is disclosed. A passcode or PIN associated with a customer value card can be securely authenticated by an issuer prior to authorizing payment. An Access Control Server (ACS) can receive the PIN or passcode from a customer via a secure connection over a public network. The ACS can generate an encrypted PIN and can communicate the encrypted PIN to a remote issuer for authentication. The ACS can use one or more hardware security modules to generate the encrypted PIN. The hardware security modules can be emulated in software or implemented in hardware. The system can be configured such that the PIN is not exposed in an unencrypted form in a communication link or in hardware other than the originating customer terminal.

  • Publication number: 20040003584
Abstract: An apparatus and method provided for utilizing radiation pressure provided by a light wave to generate mechanical work. The apparatus includes a containment chamber constructed to contain the propagation of light waves therein along a predetermined reflected light wave path. The apparatus also an optic switch selectively operable in an open mode and a closed mode, wherein the open mode allows a light wave to enter the containment chamber and the closed mode prevents escape of the light wave from the containment chamber. Further, the apparatus has a reflective mirror positioned at one end of the containment chamber. The reflective mirror has a first reflective surface.
