    Abstract: A weld wire recovery system recovers the spent weld wire pieces from steel can bodymakers. The weld wire recovery system comprises a modular collection station installed at each bodymaker. The modular collection stations are connected via headers to a single central collection station. Each modular collection station comprises an entry fitting into which the spent pieces of weld wire drop. A primary air intake is connected to each entry fitting. An exhauster at the central collection station draws transport air into the upstream end of the primary air intake and into the entry fitting at a volume and velocity sufficient to sweep the pieces downstream through the header to a separator. A dielectric flexible connector directs the pieces from the bodymaker to the entry fitting. The flexible connector can be removed from the entry fitting for sampling the condition of the pieces.

    Abstract: A pocket heat exchanger comprises an elongated combustion chamber that defines a plane passing through the combustion chamber longitudinal axis. A two-pass, three-pass, or four-pass duct system is arranged symmetrically about the plane to conduct hot products of combustion produced in the combustion chamber in parallel paths to a flue. The pocket heat exchanger is installable as a modular unit into the pocket of a recirculatory fluid system. The symmetrical design of the pocket heat exchanger assures that a stream of recirculating gas flowing past the pocket heat exchanger is heated to have a uniform temperature across its cross section. A shroud partially surrounding the combustion chamber and the duct system aids in directing the recirculating gas to thoroughly scrub the combustion chamber for maximum heat transfer to and temperature uniformity of the stream of gas. The flue for the products of combustion may pass through the stream of recirculating gas, or it may pass outside the stream of the gas.

    Abstract: An overspray extractor collects the overspray of a volatile organic compound coating material sprayed onto three-piece steel cans. The overspray extractor comprises a hood having five orthogonal walls, with the bottom wall having a slot of predetermined width that is placed above the cans and downstream of the coating material nozzles. The ratio of the height of the hood between the top and bottom walls to the width of the bottom wall slot is greater than one. The hood is connected by means of a throat located opposite an outside wall to an exhaust passage. When a vacuum is applied to the hood, coating material overspray and atmospheric air are drawn into the hood through the slot and through the hood into the exhaust passage. A slit in the outside wall permits atmospheric air to be drawn into the hood to flow along and scrub the top wall of solids from the coating material that coagulate on the top wall.

    Abstract: A burner mounting enables a longitudinally extending burner to be removably suspended from a framework without requiring the use of any tools or the manipulation of any fasteners associated with the mounting. The burner mounting comprises an angle fastened to each end of the burner and having one horizontal leg. The upper leg of a channel is secured to the framework above each burner angle. Shims or other adjustment means are interposed between the channel upper leg and the framework to locate a channel lower leg at a selected vertical location. The horizontal legs of the angles rest on the lower legs of the respective channels. Pins in the angles engage slots in the channel lower legs. The slots accommodate thermal expansion of the burner while maintaining transverse positioning of the burner relative to the framework.
