  • Patent number: 4604922
Abstract: A drill pipe spinner is disclosed including cam surfaces which in the course of tensioning the chain close the jaws of the spinner. The same cam surfaces provide jaw opening moments on release of the chain tension to allow the separation of the spinner from the pipe. These cam surfaces are formed on either side of two tracks in which two slides are fixedly connected to idlers which engage the chain. The idlers, moreover, are mounted for rotation on a transverse bar connected to a hydraulic actuator for tensioning the chain by convolving the chain path.

  • Patent number: 4396038
Abstract: Set out herein are improvements to pipe thread protectors of the type described in U.S. Pat. No. 3,038,502 to Hauk et al., characterized by a band buried within a split torroidal envelope with the band ends being pulled together by a cam operated lever. It is the improved structure of the cam and the attached lever configuration resulting in manufacturing convenience that is set out herein. The cam is generally conformed as a cut out on the interior of a cylindrical sleeve which is provided with a release recess through which the lever may be inserted or withdrawn. These features permit the complete forming of the lever and the cam while separated thus allowing techniques like investment casting to be used for the construction thereof.

  • Patent number: 4354529
Abstract: A resilient pipe thread protector comprises a substantially annular resilient body having an interior opening provided with a thread pattern conformed to mate with the threads of the ends of a drill pipe. To allow for installation onto drill pipes of various sizes the thread protector includes a convolved split defining a plurality of interlocking projections and includes a similarly patterned circular spring within the interior thereof. The foregoing assembly may be formed by injection molding with the convolved split being achieved through the use of a separator plate splitting the mold.

  • Patent number: 4324157
Abstract: A clamp for drill pipes includes an hydraulic motor adapted to drive a gear head which is keyed to a sprocket engaged to a sheave chain. The sprocket and the associated equipment are mounted between two plates which are also provided with an hydraulically operated slide for advancing two rollers. It is these rollers that, by their advancement, enlarge or shorten the effective sheave chain loop, the sheave chain passing over idlers towards the end of two hinged arms or jaws which are conformed to receive the drill pipe. Formed at the end of each jaw are bearing seats each adapted to receive a bearing cap which engages ball bearings in corresponding bearing races supporting the center shaft of two turning sprockets around which the chain is looped. Each of the bearing races includes an enlarged periphery and it is between this periphery and the chain loop that the pipe is engaged.

  • Patent number: 4291073
Abstract: A compound comprising molybdenum disulfide emulsified in a resin of the para phenyl phenol formaldehyde group, diluted in a vehicle of the methylbenzene group in a homogenized emulsion is deposited onto metal surfaces preheated to a surface temperature of 350.degree. to 500.degree. F. The heat stored in the metal promotes quick evaporation of the benzene vehicle while the resin sets. The cure and evaporation of the carrier may be further promoted by baking the coated article in an oven at a temperature of 300.degree. to 500.degree. F.
