  • Patent number: 4226272
Abstract: A removable tire traction device adapted to be positioned on a vehicle tire. The device includes approximately four substantially U-shaped cleats which are loosely positioned around the tire. A ring-shaped cleat holder is positioned adjacent to the outer sidewall of the tire. Mounting means is provided on the cleat holder to loosely attach the cleats to the cleat holder whereby the cleats are free to move in all directions within fixed movement limits relative to the cleat holder and the tire.

  • Patent number: 4114875
Abstract: An exercising device having a housing which is attached to a stationary surface. A cord with a hand grip on its free end can be pulled out of the housing against the internal resistance of the exercising device. The amount of internal resistance can be varied by control knobs. An automatic rewind mechanism draws the cord back into the housing when the cord is released. The device has, as a preferred specific feature, a manually adjustable resisting force mechanism. This mechanism has a straight surface which is contacted and engaged by the cord over the full length of the straight surface. This mechanism includes the preferred combination of a stationary capstan around which the cord is wrapped, and a variable force friction nip mechanism which (a) retards the cord as it is pulled out of the housing, and (b) maximizes the capstan's frictional resistance by keeping the cord tightly wound around the capstan as the cord is being pulled out of the housing.

  • Patent number: 4010948
Abstract: The exercising device has a housing which is attached to a stationary surface. A cord which has a hand grip on its free end can be pulled out of the housing against the adjustable internal resistance of the exercising device. A spring-powered cord retractor reel rewinds the cord back into the housing when the cord is released. The cord runs from the retractor reel around a plurality of sequentially arranged capstans and then out of the housing. The internal resistance on the cord is preset with manually operated push buttons which lock a selected number of capstans so that they will not rotate in the unwind direction. The remaining capstans are permitted to freewheel in the unwind direction. The push buttons can be set to produce a wide variety of cord resistance force levels.

  • Patent number: 3995853
Abstract: The exercising device has a housing which is attached to a stationary surface. A cord which has a hand grip on its free end can be pulled out of the housing against the adjustable internal resistance of the exercising device. The amount of internal resistance can be varied by means of a control knob. A spring-powered cord retractor reel rewinds the cord back into the housing when the cord is released. The internal resistance is quantitatively adjusted by a friction brake mechanism including a fixed annular brake shoe, a rotatable annular brake disk, and a mechanism for continuously clamping the brake shoe against the brake disk. An automatic mechanism is provided to lock the brake disk to the cord retractor reel as the cord is pulled out of the housing, and to unlock the brake disk from the cord retractor reel as the cord is rewound into the housing.
